Hi All,

just lifted the following post from one of the other motorhome forums. It's very bad news for some.

Don

"Having been told that NFU insurance covers Morocco. I rang for a quote and they confirmed that Morocco was included in their comprehensive european cover. It now transpires when we asked for a Green Card that their cover is THIRD PARTY ONLY AND CANNOT BE EXTENDED.

Having changed all our policies for home & vehicles to NFU we are somewhat disappointed. We have just had our jabs to travel and now feel deflated ( probably the puncture wounds).

I wonder if anyone does fully comprehensive cover for Morocco?

How many NFU customers travelling around Morocco realise that they are not covered for Fire, Theft, or any damage to their own vehicle?.

When I queried this, this morning the NFU office staff said that they didn't realise that people were not fully covered they tell everone they are!!!!

I feel like telling them that as we made it a condition of our changing our insurance cover to them that they should honour their sales promise as part of the agreement. I don't know whether or not this argument would work

Hi Don
Valuble and timely info as a few here are planning just such a trip,
Knowing I would have no such problems I called my company and asked what cover I had for Morroco

Reply-------NONE:Eeek: now contacting the actual broker for more info on what I can get:cry:
Geo

Further to my inquiries re cover of any kind for Morocco
I have been informed by my insurer RH Specialist Insurance that no cover whatsoever will be forthcoming for Morocco
It appears therefor that the only option if it exists is to purchase border crossing type cover, I take it this will be only third party and will be minimum legal requirement for the country concerned,

1.How do people feel about only having this minimum cover (I'm not enthralled by it)

2. what does it cost

3. Are there any alternatives other than renewing with a company that will cover fully comp
Geo

We will be contacting insurers tomorrow to see what our position is but after reading this I don't hold out much hope!

Has anyone asked Ray (Desert Detours) what he recomends or what others do I'm sure he must know.

Hi Geo

That was the position we found ourselves in last trip.. not the best situation .. it costs about €80 for the month, bought at the border, 3rd party cover only.
There is another thread on this topic on mhf, someone has found fully comp from Comfort Insurance, I intend to get a quote when my renewal is due next April, I'm with NFU at the moment.

Hi Ror yes sent e-mail

Hi Jim thanks for the info, the person you refer to, do they have a RV or Euro Van,
Do comfort do RV cover
Geo

Some told me that SafeGuard have a Morocco extension to the policy, I will check tomorrow

It's Hymer, AFAIK Comfort cover RVs.. some phoning around needed

Geo,

Comfort will insure your RV but I don't know how competitive they are.

I've been with them for ten years now as we decided to stay with the same insurers when we were in our mid sixties, it has certainly paid off for us.

The main problem with only third party is you have to be able to afford to walk away if the van is written off.

What ever you do make sure you have breakdown/recovery cover because if a vehicle gets written off/stolen in Morocco you could be liable for the import duty as visitors vehicles are imported duty free.

I know SAGA will issue a manual green card for Morocco so it might be worth checking them as well.

No need to worry about breakdown or recovery on a DD tour

Third Party Insurance - Definition

For those thinking of taking out third party insurance hear is a loose definition:

"Insurance which covers against liability which the insured may incur to another person. If the you damage someone else's vehicle, or injure someone, your third party insurance will pay for any damages you have to pay to the third party, but you will not be able to claim for damage to your own vehicle."

I can't understand any full timer chancing his arm with third party insurance in Morocco, the implications are enormous.:Eeek: Just my opinion of course

Hi Don

Yes, I totally agree, our trip was a spur of the moment decision while visiting Ray, caught up in the excitement I never thought of insurance until we were leaving Spain ..
It was a calculated risk but I wouldn't do it again nor would I suggest anyone else should either..

Hi all

We need to get back on topic here.

Suzy and Jim Jam - did you manage to contact your insurers today to see what they had to say about this.

Pammy

Sorry Pammy didn't get chance today (she lies, she forgot) SORRY

Hi Suzy, that's ok, I will probably bump this thread up tomorrow just to get it some attention again.

Will talk tomorrow which may remind you anyway.
Pammy

PS - Have you noticed how I keep following you around these threads - I really should retire to bed, I've got to be at work at 8am - Corgi gas men waiting for assessments!!

Safeguard

Just spoken to Safeguard, they said that my existing policy is OK for Morocco, all I need to do is apply for a green card before I go and i will have fully comp cover for a max of three months.

I use safeguard because they are keenly priced and they recover (here and in Europe) heavy motorhomes. The free fully comprehensive Morocco cover is just another reason I will probably be staying with them. :yeah:

Good news Jim, do you mind saying how much the premium is ? :thumb:

Thats great news, when our insurance is up we will speak to Safeguard, thanks for the information.

I am nowhere near the paperwork, but I will when I am.

I'm with Safeguard and my policy sounds the same as Jim Jam,s and I pay just under £500-00 pa

Am going to double check with them on Morocco cover though.
Like JJ I went with them because they claim to recover large vehicles, just hope I never have to test them out.

Hi,

I insure with Safeguard and yes there breakdown cover extends to vehicles over 3500kg but please read the breakdown cover in relationship to vehicles over 3500kg, as there were some differences, specifically around the hotel and car hire clauses. I still think they provided very competitive cover and see no reason why we won't use them again next year ? and would recommend them.

By the way they also provide Travel Insurance specifically designed for motorhomes so its worth having a look at as it may also cover Morocco seeing as how their main insurance apparently does ??

Hope this helps

Hi all interested party's
Spoke to Safeguard today and can confirm all is as described in previous posts, As always, Insurance is a postcode lottery, so premiums will differ I will be happy to take up Safeguard for the next renewal, slightly dearer than my present Co, but include recovery so money will be saved there next year, swings and round abouts me thinks, I would say competitive, and certainly good cover:thumb:

I am not going to Morocco so don't need that cover but my current policy with towergate Baker is £600 including euro breakdown with unlimited weight.

May be changing soon as well:Wink:

Just back from another Moroccan tour [away again in 10 days]……..

Be aware of those with limited knowledge, miss-informed or just “spoilers”…….

Firstly it should be admitted that a tour of Morocco is NOT your standard “Euro Tour” and is therefore NOT for some. The limited element of risk has to be balanced personally.

Road traffic accidents? Mostly a myth. With no night/dark driving, enforced speeds and low speeds, road conditions that have improved over the last few years to the point where they shame the UK/Euro……. Add to that very low traffic volume………Balance the risk!......In 27 years I have only seen ONE group/client traffic accident……and that was ME!

But then again, as has been shown, full Insurance cover IS available……just phone around and if possible get beyond the trainee on the phone……For example, many can’t seem to get full cover with NFU…..I do!

Yes, your vehicle is temporally “imported”. But NO……in the case of total loss [extremely unlikely] you would NOT be liable for duty etc once the correct process [minimum] is completed.

Breakdown? On most guided tours, such as ours, the total mileage in Morocco is about 1800……..is your vehicle in good enough condition for 1800 miles? If not best sell it! Use a tour guide/operator [such as Desert Detours of course] that can access repair facilities and/or has extensive equipment to hand. Do they have contacts that can receive dispatched parts etc….....?

Theft from vehicles is almost non-existent and vehicle theft [how far would a Moroccan in a UK reg motorhome get!!!] non-existent…….In nearly 27 years working in Morocco I have never heard of an incident.

I am told 37.000 motorhomes went to Morocco last year……….MMMMmmmmmm……[nearly 200 with us!]

Ray [resting awhile in sunny Spain......]

Hi Ray enjoy your well earned rest you poor Bu**er:Rofl1:
Thanks for the input, for me, the road risks and theft were not an issue, we can all take extra care if reqd, it's the unforeseen element that concerned me, fire, as an example, is an unforeseen danger and there are a lot of bucks residing in an RV, to stand a total loss without financial protection However full cover is available from Safeguard so I for one will be swapping next year
Geo

Hi Ray have to agree with Geo, got tooo much money tied up in the old girl, if towergate bakers who I am insured with don't do morocco fully comp. then I will be changing to safeguard.

Olley

Hi all
We are with Safeguard as their windscreen cover is unlimited value for all round windows, and europeon recovery is included.: Some insurers europeon cover is included but they charge you for the cost of the ferry crossing.
