I'm a newbie
Im having some problems getting up slopes in my 1996 Peugeot Boxer Elddis Autoquest 350s, 2.5 diesel motorhome. (Non turbo)
Hills are a nightmare however much wellie I give it on the run up!

When I was in Dorset last week, one of the kind funsters suggested I may need to do ?????????? But I'm blowed if I can remember what he said! New terms and no place to write it down at the time means the info has been lost to me!

But I do remember him saying to post on here as there would be lots of good advice as to what needs to be done as the more help I can get the better!

So, me and Doris will wait to hear from you.

Cheers

At the same time as having the diesel injectors overhauled ask the mechanic to change the air filter. We had a full service just after we bought our 1994 Talbot (with a non-turbo 2.5 diesel engine) seven years ago and changing the air filter make a heck of a difference.

To be honest, an old technology engine like yours without a turbo is always going to struggle carrying all that weight on anything but a level road, a friend had a similar model and was very disappointed with the performance and economy.
Just make sure it is serviced properly, put some injector cleaner through it,( Diesel Magic from Wilko),maybe a couple of times, and learn to chill while driving, you will be able to see the scenery better!!

The problem is that your engine never made much power when new so I would start with ensuring the servicing is spot on like clean air and fuel filters.
A can of decent injector cleaner through the system should help to bring back some power.
You didn't mention the mileage but if under 60 thousand I wouldn't have thought other work would be likely to improve the power.
The only real option to get up those hills quicker would be to fit a turbo version of your engine but apart from the expense you could have insurance problems due to making it a modified vehicle and maybe the brakes would also need improvement.
Leaving as it is and keep smiling that you are at the front of the queue

Thanks for that info! I will ask the mechanic next week when it's booked in! Very grateful for all help!

Thanks for your input! I'm happy chilling, but doing hill starts on a slope is not fun! Off to Wilko I will go!

I have the exact same problem. I feel your pain...

My 1999 Swift Sundance is a 2.8D non-turbo too (with under 38,000 miles on the clock). Joining a motorway with an uphill on-slip (seriously, what idiot invented those?!) is absolutely scary... We can slow to 45mph :(

Even with a good runup towards a hill we can often slow from +56 mph to mid-40's.

I don't think there are any firms left specialising in fitting turbos to these engines now. Even if they did, I'm not sure I'd want to spend £2,500+ on it.

I emailed MMM magazine a while back on the off chance, here was their reply:

Please note reply from our Fiat consultant Nick:
I know that there have been firms in the past who could add a turbo to engines that did not have them but I have not heard of any for a while. It is not beyond the realms of possibility to fit a 2.8idTD engine to this vehicle but you would need a wiring loom from the donor vehicle as well as the non turbo engine has glow plugs and the idTD does not. There may be some other small differences. A fuel pump specialist might be able to adjust the fuel pump on the 2.8D to get a bit more power. Other than that, this engine only ever had 85hp and that was barely enough to keep a modest panel van moving. Getting a turbo engine will be expensive enough without considering the 20 or so hours that a like-for-like engine swap would take, plus the loom and the engine mounts etc etc but the power increase to 122hp would be quite a revelation! It would not be possible to fit a more modern common rail engine (2.8JTD) because these require a lot more electrical modifications and even the instrument cluster would need to be changed.

I think I would either swap the vehicle for one with more power or get used to driving in a leisurely fashion.

85HP?!

What the...!

I have a motorbike with more horses than that, and that doesn't need to move a 3.5ton vehicle with all the aerodynamic properties of a block of flats!

So that's about it really, I don't think we don't have much choice but to grin(?) and bear it...

Oh RogerThat, thank you so much, and the trouble you've taken!! And I take all your points mentioned!

If I could get it up to 40mph I would be very happy, but in first gear it doesn't happen! Too many first gear hill starts for my liking and not even steep hills! so I think there is a bit of a problem! A bit worried but I will try all the advice and continue to enjoy smelling the flowers along the way! :) I have plenty of time for a good sniff as I snail trail along !! :D

Ha ha he he, lucky I like being in the front with not a care in the world! Till the engine starts to overheat! Hey ho! I'm going to try that injector cleaner that's for sure! !! Thank you for your advice and trouble! Much appreciated!

As has already been said it was never powerful even when new!!!!!!!
If it were mine, I would slowly go through the points mentioned, starting with tyre pressures---free, then air cleaner----not expensive, diesel filter also not expensive------see if you can reduce the weight you are carrying, has it got anything on the roof to hold it back?,. Getting injectors rebuilt/replaced is relatively expensive and as already mentioned fitting a turbo is not only very expensive but also not a good idea in my honest opinion.
If you can compare the performance with a similar motorhome you may find it is as it always was????????
Learn to enjoy you new pace of life LOL.

One thing that we never do is park in a lay-by that's facing uphill. Much safer if on the flat or, better still, facing downhill!

I would definitely recommend changing the fuel filter to see if it helps. Years ago I had a diesel Volvo V70 which would cut out if you accelerated hard or tried to go over 60. It turned out it was fuel starvation so I changed the fuel filter and then it went like a rocket!!!

When adding the injector cleaner, add it when the fuel tank is a quarter full or less, the less the better, then give it a spirited run, may need doing more than once if clogged up, I know from experience that Diesel Magic works, cannot recommend any other brand personally.

Very good advice! Thank you!

Funnily enough, my drive is on a slope and I have to park it facing up and that's no problem for Doris, it's dropping down gears on a run up a hill, however much revs I dontmchanging gear, or double de clutching etc!

Thanks again

Thanks so much for your advice and input! I have ordered some fuel cleaner Archoil AR6400D Max to help clean the fuel system and I've booked her into a garage next week for mechanic to have a look! But I'm hoping to follow your advice first and hope it can solve a bit of a problem!

It happens when I'm changing down the gears going up a hill, however much revs I give it it just all but dies! Quite alarming for the guys behind!!

I've taken out all heavy stuff that I could and travel very light but it's got wood doors and that's the only stuff left that's heavy!

So fingers crossed some of this will help me enjoy my slow pace!
Oh, years ago, after I gave up rushing up and down motorways being a sales rep, I bought a Citroen 2CV so that I could tootle around and enjoy the scenery...... it was bliss in Hetty!!!! So Doris will be the same!
Photo of Hetty! I miss her!!., :(

Thanks again for your time
