I've noticed whilst cycling around Ghent and Bruges that 50cc mopeds and scooters are allowed to use the cycle lanes and canal paths. Does anyone know if thats the same all over Europe? If it is I might swap my 125 for a 50.

It might be that anything not requiring registration is allowed to use cycle lanes after all a lot of e bikes have similar performance to a 50 cc moped. We've just got back from France if we had the microcars here I might be tempted to get one and a trailer for the MH.

I have seen them and vaguely knew some details but used Google to remind myself,

"Since 1974, the 'light moped' was legalised in the Netherlands and allowed to share cycling lanes with bicycles. These mopeds are mechanically controlled to not exceed 25km/h and required to display a blue number plate"

In Holland last month the blue plated mopeds were travelling at around 30 mph in the cycle lanes and even small motorcycles riding 2 up

Not legally; my ebike loses interest in helping me at about 16mph, although on the flat I usually chug the very heavy thing along at 17-18mph. My max speed, so far, is 40mph, but that was gravity assisted and not on a cycle path.

Unless you’re talking about cities then in the rest of Europe there’s nothing like the Dutch cycle infrastructure so you may not get much chance in France or Germany

France though was a lot better than here.

I'm actually in Belgium and seen quite a few standard vespa type 50cc scooters with adults on the cycle paths and running the wrong way on the city streets where allowed. The signs seem to indicate cycles and class A allowed. I'll take a photo of a sign shortly.

I used to cycle around lake Annecy. I don’t use the roads much these days due to bad drivers. .

But the cycle path from Doussard - Annecy can also be very dangerous. If it’s not a pelotón of cyclist bursting through at 40kph, it’s people, often the older generation trying to fit between you and the peloton on e—bikes making dangerous fast manoeuvres.

Last time we did that cycle path there was a spot with loads of flowers are the side, someone must have come a cropper.
Probably best avoided at weekends, always been very quiet when we have done it probably was mid week out of season.

Just spent a couple of months in Sweden and mopeds are included on cycle paths too. We didn’t see any problems it seems to work.
