Morning all

We’ve just purchased a Honda SH3300i scooter, insurance company Zurich has quoted £156/ annum, is this reasonable? Not having motorcycles for many years I have nothing to base it on, all my other vehicles are with Zurich

TIA

It sounds OK to me considering the cost of a claim if it gets stolen.
How many miles limit?
You could try Carole Nash insurance they include a free recovery service - if you would want it

Depends on no claims, accident record, convictions, miles per year, value. But seems about right as I have a 300 cc scoot too & would not argue with your quote.

Not bad. If you plan to use it abroad check how many days they allow. Also check your health/travel insurance as some limit to riding 125cc and below.

Thanks, I need to double check but I’m sure that breakdown is included, 2000 mile limit also👍

Thanks I didn’t realise that, I’ll be sure to read the small print regarding the cc, time away not a problem though 👍

I was interested in the 'Moped' in the thread title, but you stated scooter in the OP.

Are there still mopeds being produced, as with pedals

I used to have a NSU Quickly as a teenager and on some hills one did have to pedal. Top speed on flat 30mph.

This reminds me that I said I will get my motorcycle licence this winter - should be fun doing it in Poland.

I remember that they were advertised (as were other makes) as LPA mopeds - LPA meaning Light Pedal Assistance.
I am old enough to remember the pedal assist mopeds😂 loved the Honda 90 step through as well👍

That surprises me, I thought Zurich is not renewing any car insurance.

I presume you meant a Honda SH300i.

As its 279cc, you must have a full motorbike licence and experience, if that is full comprehensive with the breakdown etc., that sounds very reasonable. (y)

I used to have a NSU Quickly as a teenager and on some hills one did have to pedal. Top speed on flat 30mph.

Probably the closest modern thing is the S Pedelec (speed pedelec, sometimes called the E Pedelec), which is an electric assist bicycle. But, unlike normal legal ebikes (limited to 250W, no assistance above 25km/h - about 15mph), these can have a 4kw motor and assist up to 45km/h - about 28mph. In some parts of Europe they are effectively classed as bicycles, though there may be different rules about them in different countries. As with ebikes, you have to pedal to get power, it can't just run on a throttle.

In the UK, they are classed as a moped - so you need to have a motorbike license (or for most on here who will have had a car driving license prior to 2001 you can ride them under grandfather rights without a full test or L plates if you do a CBT - later you need a CBT and L plates. I think that's right, but it gets a bit wooly so check - it's just like a moped, class AM).
You can only ride them in places you can legally ride a motorcycle - so no bicycle paths, no disused railway line cycle routes, or cut throughs you'd use on a bicycle etc. You then also need a full sized motorcycle number plate, and insurance, and road tax (though zero rated) and a motorbike helmet, and an MOT once it gets older. Apparently MOT and insurance could be challenging - MOT because a motorbike tester could do it, but most are likely to scratch their heads a bit when you rock up on one, and many insurance companies don't have a clue what they are so won't quote.

I did look into them as a possible commuting machine for my 10 mile journey; I often cycle or take the motorbike rather than the car. Being able to keep pace in traffic whilst getting a bit of exercise on something that costs next to nothing per mile seems like a win - but the startup costs (the bike isn't cheap, registration is a pain, insurance could be expensive even though I've got big motorbikes insured) and hassle don't outweigh the advantages for me whilst I'm still fit enough to cycle it on an unpowered machine.
