OK, so set off to travel around Europe in September and we are starting to feel like we will never get any further than Spain! The plan is we are travelling from Spain to Italy across the south of France (currently in barcelona) but unfortunately they are not open until april. We now no longer care how great the sites are - near the beach and within an hour or so of montpellier would be nice, open to aires, but really, we just want to set off from Barcelona over the next day or two and hit somewhere in France on the way to Italy. Struggling to find anywhere - any suggestions gratefully received!

Collioure, just inside France on the Med coast, aire at the top of the hill, quaint coastal village at the bottom.

Lagrasse, aire in quaint village in the Pyrenees foothills.

A bit of a detour but worth it - Carcassonne. Huge aire in Car Park P2 near the old walled city.

Can't say we bothered with the middle bit as we don't like the Med coast much, so we drove across it in a day.

East of Montpellier, Aigues-Mortes - horrible name, lovely quaint old walled town with two aires. Originally built on a medieval malarial marsh, hence the horrible name.

So many lovely places on the Med coast, Séte is a stunning sea side port with grand canal, bit like Venice, we liked Gruissan near Narbonne, agree Aigues-Mortes is lovely too, the Ampitheatre at Nimes, the Camargue, Saint Marie De la Mare, St Tropez, Port Grimaud etc, etc yes lots of it will be shut, but there are Aires galore and if the sky is blue it will be lovely. Admittedly we haven't been at this time of year but I certainly wouldnt just drive past it all if you are there.

The huge aire at Gruissan port will be open and possibly free at this time of year.
Just down the road from Narbonne and close to the main route from Spain.

Not sure if the shuttle bus operates in the low season, but as med coast villages go it's a nice one. Agreed about the market.

Nimes and Arles are also both worth a visit but have no aires that I know of.

Avignon is also worth a look - not sure if Camping Bagatelle (near Pont Edouard Deladier) is open all year, but if not there's an aire just round the corner from there. I took a look at it last Autumn, all automated ticketing.

Was there last week and not free now but not expensive euro 9 from memory. Most of the bars and restaurants are shut though

Thank you everyone, so helpful, I Google motorhome parking montpellier which usually brings up camper contact places and didn't but should have looked on the actual website! The campsite in montpellier looks great too. Thank you xx
