Hi,

When we bought our MOHO the guy asked what weight we wanted to register it as, we just went with 3500 not really thinking about it. When I got the MOHO and left the showroom I got it weighed at 3240. I thought that should be ok. When back at home and after taking part in a webcast about weights, I decided to up plate to 3700. This week while on a 2 week trip, I got it weighed again, 3640. I am fortunate that I did up plate as we have been on a number of "Smart" motorways that weigh every vehicle as it passes and compares the weight to the plate. Had I not had up plated I would probably be looking at some fines on my return. My next query is should I up rate the suspension and go to 4400?

You are running close at 3640, 4400 if you can and need it. If your 3640 is with everything full 3800 might be enough.

We have pretty everything and more in there, but I am going to look at the cost of upgrading the hardware.

I would have liked to have been told in the showroom that 3500 on my vehicle was too close and I would not be able to carry all I wanted in the huge garage I have.

I had no idea that such motorway checks existed.

With the weighing on the smart motorways they will not discriminate. Whether they send out the police is a different matter, I guess it depends on how much over you are.

Here is a map of the smart motorways.

I doubt that Motorhomes will be targeted but if they do as long as your axle weights are not over max and gvw is not over no problem. So why worry about it?šŸ˜Š

My main point of the thread was that people are buying 3500 weighted (myself included) vans when they could be registered as 3700 with no issue apart from licence.

They'd have to use police. Dvsa have no power to stop mh's & cars.

**As a commercial driver, you might be asked to stop by the police or a Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency ( DVSA ) officer. They can stop vans, lorries, buses and coaches.**

75kgs each person,= 375kgs driver is already counted
Sorry, what I was saying is that I have added 400kg since buying the van, the equivalent of 4 people. I was not referring to myself and my wife.

Me neither.
Anyone know where in the country?

We have one just down the road on the M6 near Jn12.
There is a pull in area where the police take in mostly trucks and commercial vehicles for further inspection.

DVSA can stop cars if they have the required accreditation from local police area (since 2002), they may choose not to concentrate on cars but that does not mean they are not permitted to stop them for the purposes of roadworthy checks, deferred tests, PG9 etc.

Power to stop vehicle for testing: Police Reform Act 2002

8
A person whose accreditation specifies that this paragraph applies to him shall, within the relevant police area, have the power of a constable in uniform to stop a vehicle under subsection (3) of section 67 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 (c. 52) for the purposes of a test under subsection (1) of that section
. Applies to categories M2, M3, N2, N3.

yes if they have an accredited "stopping officer" but usually it will be a police officer for cars, etc; as otherwise no one stops .or they stop & ask if they have the power?
Yes in conjunction with the police.
