I am not sure if this is legal or would be any use but just ruminating (as you do) about the vulnerability of door mirrors being hit by on-coming drivers........ would it be possible to put led lights on the mirror back so on-coming drivers see them? They could be shielded from the cab so as not to interfere with the driver's night vision.

Yes but it peels off - and isn't seen until the on-coming driver is much nearer at night.

As long as the led lights are white & low-ish wattage, I don't see why not.

If you stuck the head off a street light on the mirror some numpty would still hit it.

As long as they go off at night they could be regarded as DRLs - bright during the day, dim or off at night. There are loads of single hole fix DRLs on eBay.
