Since 2009 with motorhomes several caravans then tents before that.
When we were at huisinis beach a couple of years ago we saw 2 landrovers ( those riveted farmers type ones ) with them on their roofs. The father and son team said they got all over the place with them, and I bet they did. We thought how much better than a little tent they were ! They also said the that they were surprisingly warm and cosy. They had one land rover set up like a kitchen and seating area in the back and the other storage. Great idea.

On and off for many years.
We saw one when we were in Ireland on top of a van. Parked for several nights (and in use) on a car park that clearly stated "no overnight parking - no camping" The camp site we were using (entry beside that car park) was fabulous and only 12 euros a night for a serviced pitch ...... next there will be height barriers at that car park and i can't say I would blame the locals if that happened.

It would still get in as they collapse down , then pop up for use. Well the ones we saw did anyway.

roof tents arent new . have had mine for years . the mazda one is about 2009 the vw one was fitted in 1998 went in many african countries with that one . took my tear drop caravan as well.
still have them . mind dont actually use the roof tent these days and my lad takes the teardrop on tours not me .
but roof tents are great bits of kit . make any car a useful vehicle .
mine could be used and folding onto the roofrack but i found more use for petrol cans up there .
but try a google for maggiolina i think its spelt roof tents they do very neat ones ,
mines a uk brownchurch landrover style

Stops you from being eaten in the night by arthritic polar bears that can't climb or bitten by stinging insects with no head for heights or gassed by villainous dwarves who can't reach the first rung of the ladder.......

Apparently there is a Maggiolina roof top tent being erected in this video. Must watch it again & try to spot it. Something is getting erected, anyway.

An Italian advert, only made a few years ago, but it reminds me of car ads from the 70s. :D2

Just put clear PVC sides/windows round it cover it in flowers, it can then be multi purpose, a greenhouse in the summer, and a DIY hearse in the winter also!.
well the costs of tomatoes & funerals these days is getting ridiculous. :winky:

There's a public loo there so they probably used that ? But if they went in the middle of no where off road . I bet they buried it !

They are all the rage in OZ It's a cheap way of camping, elevated to keep you away from the wild life, the other reason is cos MHs and RVs are so expensive.
