It needs to be a different network sim.
So if your mifi is say Vodaphone then you need one from EE, O2 etc..
Poundland, you can get an alternative sim card (y) cost = £1.. :D

Your phone one may work if it is from another network BUT it may be wrong size unless you have the sim adaptors. New sims now tend to come as one size to fit all and break into 3 sizes.

It may work but it is possible the network provider might object. :) This happened to me when I bought in error a Three phone sim instead of a data sim. It worked for a day or so then I started getting SMS messages from Three telling me to put the sim card back in a phone.

So it depends on the T&C's of the phone sim whether it is possible. :)

No need for data only, the ones sold in poundland are just phone sims,,
If your current phone sim is a different network then try it (y)(y)
MIFI's tend to take the larger sim, so if your phone one is smaller then you just need a sim adaptor.

Been ages since i did anything with a MIFI as now i use my phone as a hotspot and tether to that..

Whether you are permitted to use your phone sim in a MIFI is down to the phone sim provider, some allow you to do this (Three) but others may not and may cause them to cut you off if you try it. Best check the T&Cs for your phone sim before doing anything.

As for unlocking the MIFI, this can often be done via an Ebay unlock code purchase for 99p, done it many times without a problem, but will depend on your MIFI provider and model, eg if its a Vodofone one some of their branded MIFIs can't be unlocked without paying silly money, or using them as a PAYG for a month for £5 after which Vodafone will giveyou an unlock code FOC ... this is what I had to do a few months ago when I got a good Vodafone MIFI I wanted to unlock.
