There are a couple of lessons to learn when you move from individually managing the data expense of a device’s connectivity to one where several devices can behave like they’re really on WiFi!
I mean, our devices are set to not use mobile data except for a essential apps.
But when on “WiFi” the apps will all start grabbing data.

That was fine until I supplied “WiFi” via a 4g data sim.

Now 1.3 of my 2.0GB trial sim went in less than 24hrs usage.

1 big drain was my iPad downloaded the next iOS update. Doh! I’ve turned off auto upgrade.
I expect the other drain is the overly complicated photo syncs I have in place.
I’ve got two apple devices so I like iCloud to keep photos in syncs between devices. Later when all pics are backed up I’ll remove the device copy of photos.
But it’s google photos where photos permanently end up. Unlimited free photo storage ?

1. Is there an easy way for MiFi WiFi to not appear as unlimited WiFi?
2. Where can I break my photo sync chain? I expect I have to fully abandon iCloud but google photos also has a data load.
Which service has the best manual sync setup?

Assuming you click 'connect' to your MIFI rather than it automatically connecting, go to where you'd click to connect and go into the MIFI's properties. Once in there you can change it to a metered connection so it should prevent a lot stuff that is done in the background automatically.

Turn off Auto updates for everything and turn off WiFi before closing the cover otherwise it stays on.
Absolutely, this possible in the Wi-Fi protocols. for example, it my Windows 10 PC uses my phone's wifi hotspot, the PC detects it is on a metered connection and disable almost everything by default. You have to authorise email updates, OneDrive sync, etc...

For that to work the wifi hotspot has to implement that port of the wifi protocol and the clients (phones, iPads, PCs, Macs, etc...) have to implement it as well.

I'd expect the Apple devices to have a pretty good wifi implementation, so I4d suspect the router in your case.
