Been moho’ing for a time now
I know I've mentioned it before - and I don't know if it was a special time limited offer [there seemed to be a lot about due to new Uni year]...

But I signed up with Three for 40gb/mth for £14 free mifi gizmo... [20gb was £9]

...but it is a 24 month contract and the Huawei seems to be a budget version as there's no external aerial connectors.
...however, it seems to be able to pull in a strong signal when my phone barely registers one and being tiny I've just slotted it into the rooflight [I could make something more secure with a pad of velcro]

mine is the Huawei E5573 and that HAS two aerial sockets, and also seems to pull a stronger signal than the ipad, which is also on "3"

As is mine but without the sockets - believe me I've looked!
I suspect cost cutting in latest freebie model.
As I've said, so far not an issue.

On the same side as the USB port is a small flap, you just lift the flap and there are two aerial sockets

What model of MIFI have you been given with your contract?

has that got two aerial sockets?

There are TWO versions of the E5573 MIFI so be careful which one you get ... they are distinguishable by the buttons on the front:

The better E5573 (more expensive) can have up to 10 items connected at the same time:

the paired down version E5573bs-322 has a square button and can have up to 5 items connected at the same time:

It may be that the cheaper one doesn't have the external aerial connections but as I haven't got one to look at I can't be sure!

Some great deals to be had out there funsters so a couple of things to be aware of speaking from experience. I have a rolling contact for 15gb per month with 3, despite their promotion of feel at home they do restrict you to 12gb per month when using it onn the continent. This also applies to the 40gb contract or any other in excess of 12gb. I fell foul of it last week and ran up a bill of £6 after using up 12gb. I use a data hungry Apple iPad we also have iPhones the phones were the culprit, I omitted to switch their wifi off and while online with my tablet they were uploading photos etc to iCloud and btcloud even though on standby hence eating my allowance. We are presently on a site in Roses, Spain, another Brit a few pitches away with a 40gb monthly allowance has exceeded his 12gb and run up a bill of almost £70 using iPlayer. Download and use the HUAWEI app onto your device especially if abroad and check it daily it will notify you of your usage and warn once you approach their limits (i.e. 80%) Other than that a mifi is the way to go.

Yup - square button so cheaper pared down version - but at £14/40gb mth what's to complain about, especially as it seems to have a good internal aerial & is small enough to be positioned in the best possible location.

Re the 12gb cap overseas on 'feel at home'.
  • It's widely advertised.
  • Feel at home isn't a replacement for getting a fully featured local sim whilst in a Euro country - it was designed for a tourist spending a few days overseas, and as such I personally don't think the 12gb limit unreasonable.
  • Go Binge and stream either Netflix or TVPlayer and you don't use your data so don't risk hitting the data cap.
  • It's all about being aware of what product you've bought.

Not complaining ... just making people aware if they do want one they can attach an external aerial to.

Understood - even the guys in the Three shop thought it had aerial sockets - so I'm guessing "square button" is the latest iteration... the cost cutting helping to allow the great data deal?
It must be accepted that MH'ers must be in the minority of customers, and those who spend months overseas an even smaller segment.
Simply, the product is not designed for such travellers.

For me, a heavy data user travellling solely within the UK, the product seems almost perfect.
As discussed elsewhere, if it had a higher/unlimited data cap I'd be using it domestically and binning my £200 landline.

Speedtest results:
Langtoft is not the best area of reception.

The bottom figure is my Plusnet Landline on WiFi
The middle figure is the Three Mifi from the same spot in the lounge.
The top result is with the mifi upstairs by the window...

If I wasn't such a heavy consumer, or Three had a higher cap - then I could go completely mobile & ditch the landline...

As it is when my landline is due for renewal, it might be worth seeing if 2x mifi contracts = 1 landline :cautious:.

I suspect - that unless I completely change my consumption - that giving up "unlimited" won't be an option...

The Plusnet dashboard is a mine of useful information (y)
Billing Period Peak usage Off-Peak usage Total usage
15 Jul - 14 Aug 281.26GB 42.44GB 323.70GB
15 Aug - 14 Sep 249.8GB 147.9GB 397.70GB
15 Sep - 14 Oct 350.6GB 59.77GB 410.37GB

Interestingly though, it seems my VPN does work as they've only identified some 10% to be P2P
;)

If it's cat videos, it'll be the dog watching .

It's interesting to see from the Dashboard that they really have no clue as to what or how I use my internet.
They provide a very detailed breakdown - I've apparently made 1.6mb of broadband phonecalls, nope. I've used 0kb of email and I'm a very heavy user of email... most of my usuage is bundled under "other" :ROFLMAO:
