when is the best time to go to scotland and avoid the midges ,and are the midges just near water or are they everywhere as we went to the Edinburgh tattoo one year and i dont remember being bothered with the little blighters any help appteciated

Best time is before June and after September. Depends in the weather at the time and where you are. They don't like wind. They need water but that can be just damp moorland. I have found that they are less prevalent near the coast. When I say coast I mean less than a couple of miles inland!

I worked in Scotland for a good few years and did 150 Monroes. Terrible midges in sheltered glens. Glen affric was the worst closely followed by torridon. Nothing in Inverness or Edinburgh.

Everything you need to know including forecasts once the season starts 👍

We have found the best cream to use is Avon Skin so Soft. I was falling about with laughter when someone recommended it to us but it actually works & does not stain clothes etc

Not many about just now
Can't recommend the weather though
Most of the time they are not a problem but get into the wrong place on the wrong day and they are the pits :(

Unfortunately I think they changed the formula so it doesn't work anymore, certainly didn't for me last yea when I got well and truly bitten, I bought some Smidge for our second trip but fortunately didn't need it.

Yes they appear to have changed the formula of the Avon product, we ended up buying smidgen last year.

Broadly:
Worst months are July and August.
June and September can go either way.
But you can be lucky.
Worse west coast than east.
Worst of still/humid/damp/shady places/dawn and dusk.
Worst midges I’ve ever seen Loch Eil.
We are regularly in Torridon - gardening and setting boats up can be bad.
Out on the water you’re fine.

Smidge is the only thing we have found to be effective.
Midge nets a must.

To save me typing things again, just read the banner at the bottom of my box. just look down & you'll see it now.

It's great to know I'm effective............ oh sorry Smidge not Smudge😂😂

It really doesn't work for me or any of my family. My theory is that it only works for people who wouldn't get bothered by midges in the first place.

I could swear drinking red wine keeps them away. My mum gets plagued by them and she’s a tea totaller. I very rarely get bitten after drinking red wine.

I suspect it may be influenced by how 'pickled' you are at the time :giggle: ... in your case I suspect the fumes emanating from you kills them before they get near to have a nibble!

Exactly my point.

We’ve been to Scotland 15 times now and can bear witness to the dreaded midge,,,they are brutal,,we tend to go before the end of May or in Mid September, which happens to be when the schools are in session👍,,as for midge protection,,Avon so soft used to be good,,but not any more,,,,Smidge it the way forward it really works,,,whatever time you go just enjoy it,,,,it’s my favourite place on this Earth 👍👍👍👍
