The best place? Or the cheapest place?

I've bought various versions from eBay over the years with no problems.

But yes, another vote here for Open Office every time :)

I purchased a years license recently from John Lewis. Much better than all that Open Office malarkey. It was around 70 quid for the year but worth every penny.

Open Office is free, looks almost identical to Microsoft Office BUT on occasions it shows some incompatibilities which can be awkward to work around.

For anyone looking for a free office suite, LibreOffice is probably a better bet than OpenOffice.

Would post more, but on phone, so look on Wikipedia for why.

You can buy MS Office on Ebay with proper authorisation key, for peanuts.

They were offering the latest full MS office 365 is it as an incentive to sign up to OneDrive a couple of weeks ago. Took advantage of it. I think I can cancell at anytime.

Open Office for me, it's free and it's as good as MS Office.

Libre office is better than openoffice. They were the same thing at one point but Libre has had a lot more development work in it since. Long history...

It may depend what packages you want, eg if you only want the basics such as Word and Excel then it will be cheaper than if you also want Access etc. If you don't need to specifically have packages that are genuine Microsoft, ie you don't need to use stuff sent to you by others/for others/for work etc, then I'd go with one of the free options suggested.

if like me you have used ms office for a long time and you know your way around it then the £70 for office 365 per year on 5 machines is ok for me.

I bought Office 2005 Home and Student Edition (I think from memory) for about £100 with a deal for a free upgrade to Office 2007 when it came out. Sure enough I got the upgrade sent FOC. It includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook and allows use on up to 3 computers at the same time.

Since then I have been installing it onto each of the computers Angela and I have used without any problems. Still works fine for me and still gets updates when needed automatically. So £100 for 2 computers at any one time for the last 12 years. Seems a good deal to me.

Having used OpenOffice I switched to LibreOffice and much prefer the latter.

The version of MS Office that I actually found easy to use and actually helped rather than hindered productivity was the 2003 one, which I am still using for work. Later versions of MS Office just became more and more bloated, irritiating to use, and slowed me down.

The problem I found with office was that you had to pay for upgrades between the versions and newer versions quite often struggled with older versions of files.

I moved to OpenOffice then onto Libreoffice. They can both open any MS Office file and write to most MS office versions as well. This obviously excludes certain macros etc.

Yes you had to pay for later versions, but I never bothered and still use Office 2007. And that version gets regular security updates still. Office 2007 handles .doc and .docx files (and the same with the ones for Excel and powerpoint) and I have never had any problems with others' Office files and I have not heard of them having problems with mine.
