Don't want to go off topic but with my first trip abroad in the motorhome imminent and now well into the internet, unlike my previous caravan sorties in the 90's, I've been looking at all sorts of options lately.

I've ordered a Link Removed from Motorhome Wifi that's been well aired on here recently plus a Link Removed which seemed to be reasonable for the few calls I'd be likely to make as well as a small data allowance. I understood it all last week but will have to refresh my memory again but the Fon seems a good addition to give all sorts of options depending on where you are.

:ROFLMAO: This has got me thinking (always dangerous) I was oringinaly posting the question for a mate but now thinking about getting one for me ::bigsmile:
Does the landline have to have unlimited BB or simply a BB landline ?I could go for the free BB with a 2gb monthly limit saving me £7.50 a month(via sky) then conect via the FON using a BT wifi nearby or is that just too simple ?
terry
edit My tablet finds 3 or 4 bt password protected BT landlines nearby which I could use the FON ?

Terry...... to my knowledge it doesn't need to be an unlimited connection, just a broadband connection. Once you're on FON (either with the magic FON box or as a BT customer) you can connect to any FON connection (they would be the ones identified with the word FON and not just your neighbour's BTHomeHub) you find, presumeably the strongest connection.

Rolfarris....... you've read my mind, so to speak. Following the research I've done I was thinking of getting the Motorhome Wifi antenna and Toggle sim, and if I don't get it sorted with Orange re my ability to connect to FON hotspots (I'm not optimistic) getting a FON seems such a good idea!

Don't know if it will help you, if you gp on to the bt fon website and put in a post code it will show you all the available fon accounts and I would think if you have a wifi antenna you would get a few where ever you go.

To my knowledge it will.... any router it's plugged in to!

(I'm getting nervous now that all the FON owners/users are not chipping in to this thread and lending their personal experience of these things.... as I said earlier I haven't actually got one myself and wouldn't wanna be giving out duff information!)

EDIT: Other FON/thingymabobs are or may be available.. I'm not really sure!

I've had an unlocked Huawei mifi plus a few sims sitting in my Amazon basket for a few months now, interesting watching the price go up and down and I suppose it's easy enough to buy a local sim? Although weren't there problems buying in France without a local address, or am I thinking of something else? I also came off Giff Gaff when I updated to a smart phone, just when they were allowing tethering, but the wife is still with them so possibilities there. I think I'm sorted but I'm now getting a headache, time for me bed. :thumb:

Terry..
All the info I am reading on here is correct about FON...the way I read it..I am wanting to go onto Fon here in France ..BUT I am on a orange landline router...and the way I understand it, in the agreement you have to have the permission of your providers to connect the Fon box to there home base router....!!!! getting that info agreement from Orange France..Mmmm...

But on another note I understand all SFR home base routers in France are provided with a Fon box as standard equipment:thumb:...so all SFR customer/ hotspots should allow you to connect either when you put your BT password in or your Fon password..
Also, Belgium,Belgacom....Zon...and many more providers as well as BT...here is a link of all the providers who are using FON network..scroll down the page...also look on the find a hotspot link...to check what is near you

http://corp.fon.com/

What happens when you look for wifi signals on your lappy....it will find a Fon (if there is one near you or btopen zone) signal click on that for you to enter your password and any other relevant info.

We was in Portugal over winter and a UK M/Home next to us was connected to Fon/Zon using his own BT customer hub password from home....it was Brill..that is why I would like to join...connect to BT open zone when we are in the UK...and connect to fon in France... and Zon in Portugal....I just need the permission from Orange:Doh: that's my stumbling block:Doh:

Plus if you have a Wifi booster all the better on getting those wifi signals

Good luck...Mel

11yrs, but many years a tugger.
We have BT and the Bt Openzone / FON works ok in built up areas and city centres. However bear in mind that the routers you are connecting too have a poor transmitting distance. For example as I walk the dog and pass by somebodies house who is a "Spot" the phone connects, but it is soon gone, which indicates that if you are lucky it will be ok if you are parked directly outside. Don't expect to get anything in remote areas. Never yet managed to connect onto anything at a campsite and that is with an external ariel and booster. So I use a MiFi with a 3 sim all the time now in the RV, which is ok, most of the time.

Easy peasy, except only 3 and only on one of their tariffs, are you allowed to tether. You could have tethering on other 3 contracts, but they charge you an extra £5 per month. :winky:

Not much of a problem because anyone who rings me and does not get through usually rings wifes phone ::bigsmile: just wondered ?
terry
edit forgot to ask how easy to tether phone to tablet ? is it just a case of turning both wifi's on and linking both ?

Yes, should do.

Depends on Phone and what version of Android you are running. Look in the WiFi setup for the word like "Hotspot" then follow the instructions.
