We are currently looking at purchasing a Motorhome that we will base in the UK and use to travel around Europe. We live in NZ but are originally from the UK where we had full insurance with no claims and a clean licence as we do in NZ. We are struggling to find a company that will insure us and the quotes we have been able to get so far are insane, 1.5k to 2.5k with a 1k excess.
Has anyone done this recently ? Any tips would be welcome.
Thanks very much

We organised this recently for some Kiwi friends and used Keith Michaels as a broker but it was eye-watering expensive as they are not UK Resident and restricted to 3500kg Motorhomes. If you still have UK licences with C1 then you can go above the 3500kg limit.

I read recently on another forum that NZMCA have a reciprocal arrangement with Motorhome & Caravan Club and if you join that you can use their insurance company which covers non UK Residents.

If you have a UK address, UK driving history that should make it easier rather than Kiwi's with no UK history. When we came back from NZ we used Comfort Insurance and they just used our AMI insurance no claims without a problem.

I think Down Under Insurance is no more and closed down.

Thanks for the response, I will certainly look in to the Motorhome / NZMCA option. We have had a quote from Keith Michaels, absolutely eye watering 1500 pounds but not as bad as the other quote for 2500. Our UK licence has expired and we are not allowed to renew as we are not UK residents so cant go above 3500. I will comfort, I see they are linked with Aviva who we insured with in the UK for many years, all we can do is ask the question

We have both NZ/UK Drivers licences. You can renew online your UK licence and send to a UK address they ask to validate with a UK passport but do not check Residency which is related to Taxation more than anything).

I'd get a UK address.

Do you have any relatives or friends with a UK holiday home ?
As that would be best, you can even have one of the utilities registered in your name (such as your UK mobile phone contract)

If no one has a holiday home, then if you have a UK relative you can 'rent' their garden shed for £5 a year (You can get a standard residential Short Term Tenancy Agreement document from any large stationers)

Once you have a UK address, then you can re-apply for a driving licence and get insurance as though you are based in the UK.

The fact that you 'visit' NZ for several months of the year is not really relevant

As an FYI - I see you are looking at buying a motorhome in the UK, for that you will have to have a UK address.

There is a thread here about getting a UK address for paperwork purposes for those who live full time in their motorhomes.

Ideally you need a friend with a holiday home
Next best thing is a door with a separate letterbox (the shed option)
or simply a fiend in a block of flats who will not be moving in the next few years.

Or like this house, (not mine, but belonged to a relative)
He lived in the house, left hand door, a Polish guy was registered in the middle door, and the front door on the right, which was actually the gate to the garden, was another address registered to someone else!

Just an update on this post that other may find useful, its not easy even though we have a UK address.
Stuart Collins - Max is 60K value
Milestone is now Radius and no response as yet
DUInsurance - Max is 55K
Abbeygate - Only insure vehicles based in Spain
Sterling - Quoted 2500
Keith Micheals - Quoted 1500 and most responsive
Comfort Insurance - only UK residents.
