Many years ago we stopped a night at Camping Municipal Metz. It was a miserable night but camped on the banks of the Moselle left it's impression.

We have just returned.

"You should never go back" was completely wrong. Three days there was a delight. The camp site is right in the middle of the city yet it's quiet and peaceful. It's a tree lined site with trees must be well over 100 years old, but some younger ones.

This time we saw some of Metz in the sunshine, it's a delight, several fine parks, a fine city centre with 4 grand churches and shops. One park even has a white water canoe course.

21 Euros a night with electricity in the campsite, less on the air outside.

Highly recommended.

No, but MiFi got itself confused next to the Rhein near Freiburg.

We were en route to a stellplatz in Freiburg, saw some vans parked by the Rhein so here we are, freeloading, opposite a load of folk on Rhein cruises paying through the nose for the same view.

Between Metz and here are the Voges. Oh boy are they are proper job mountains all clad in rich forests.

Quite a trip so far. My trusty old e-bike died in Metz, so that went to recycling in Metz and that splended Mr LeClerc provided a replacement at short notice for 699 Euros for a 36V 10Ah comfy sit up and beg big wheeled replacement. Regretfully new style with no throttle but I'll have to live with that, certainly can't live without an e-bike. A bit hard setting off right now but goes very well once moving.

We stopped 3 days but it was not enough in the hot sunshine. Never mind, we'll be passing that way in the future. It's a perfect gateway to Germany/Austria/Switzerland/Italy.

Next stop, the delightful Fussen. Maybe via the Rhein Falls, again.

Thanks, we are heading back to the Alsace this year, didn't do it justice last year. We've now got electric bikes as well. May well stop over at Metz, looks like my sort of place.

Did you see the Pompidou centre there - impressive building?

Hi Brian, thanks for bringing back memories of our trip to Lake Garda many years ago.

Now on the site outside Fussen but what a surprise, no lake, it's drained to repair the dam. Ah, you didn't make this one, window frame problem.

We almost made that mistake last year :D2 when we planned on spending a few days in Füssen at the end of April. Our plans changed because of the weather so we missed out Füssen entirely and we found out afterwards (by accident) that its actually a man-made lake that is drained down every winter to help avoid flooding from the spring snow melt.

You need to look up Swiss Vignette but otherwise I know of no clean air problems.

Garda is heaving and hotter than a hot thing with afterburners full on. We've never been this late and to be honest it's just too hot to consider it enjoyment. We're heading back north next week, hopefully to find some cool mountains.

Getting back to Metz. We have been there twice lovely town but both times stayed in the free aire right at the entrance to the campsite. Full (if a bit basic) services is it still there? Very popular both times we went.

Shhh! Stop telling people about it. It was nearly full when we were there last and we nearly didn't get somewhere to camp.

On way to lake garda last year we managed to get on campsite.
On way back home massive queue however 2 spaces in aire/car park next door. So we nipped into the exit of the car park drive down to the aire end and parked up.
Good job we did as people were being turned away ad campsite was full.
It was August mind you and 3pm in afternoon.

I've never been anywhere with such a high turnover, it's such an obvious stop for English and Dutch.

Could not take any more of Garda heat but 100 miles north on Lago di Caldernazza is no cooler but a lot quieter. Lovely place, one of those hidden gems.

What ever you do, don't go to Thionville - you'd hate the tranquil setting of the municipal campsite and the boulangerie Berns nearby is sinful - stay away.

Be careful what you wish for !!!

I've seen thunder and rain but this morning it's truly biblical in these mountains. God's power shower with full on lighting to match.

Half way would have been nice.

We spent two nights t the Aire outside the campsite in Metz for the 13th/14th July. No problems but there were about 40 vans parked up by end of night. there is fresh water and grey water emptying, but no chemical emptying. It costs 2 euros for parking from 9am to 2pm and 2 euros ferom 2pm to 7pm. we aarrived after 2,paid 2 euros, and no more as sat and Sun were public holidays due to the national holiday. We watched fantastic light showsad fireworks on Fri night, and a spectaclarfirework display on the Sat night.
Only bad point. One van driver decided on both Sat and Sun mornings to empty his toilet where vans emptied the grey water. Cause quite a stink, even pedestrians passing turned their noses up! He was neither British nor French in case you are wondering.

Spent a couple of days in Metz a few weeks ago met up with @Smith and Sharp there, nice town. Aire spaces were full so stayed in the carpark, it's €2 per hour, paid for Sat afternoon then free until Monday. I don't think most people bothered paying no one appears to check.
