Hi all, my sprinter only just scraped through the MOT on emissions last year.
My question is, does any one know what happens if it fails this year. Thankyou in anticipation..... :Eeek:

Next Time it’s mot is due make sure you put in some “Millers diesel additive” a few days before mot and go on an “Italian tune up” drive it in low gears to keep the revs up, I’d do that for at leat half an hour each day before mot and that should give it a good clear out...

I use “Millers” every other tank full.....(y)

I asked my tester about this the other day, he said to ask the tester to do emissions first while the engine is hot.
It can be done in any order once the test is underway.

Always take my vehicles for a good "thrash" on the way for an MOT, take the "long way" and keep the revs up once warmed through, and try and arrive as close to the appointment as possible. Fetch up nice and Hot and "cleaned out".

Yep, same here. Can’t beat a good old Italian tune up. First MOT for the Jag my daughter (who was working at the garage at the time) picked it up and delivered it back. Took a week to wipe the grin off her face

I'm a newbie
Definitely recommend the 'italian tune-up' pre test, I use a diesel additive called Diesel Rhino, similar to Millers ecomax cetane improver and has lubricant and an injector cleaner. (similar effect to using premium diesel).
I have also heard 'TerraClean ' can have good results.

Clean/NEW AIR FILTER, and Italian Tuneup before you go for the test. The engine just spends its life pottering along and having too easy a life, put injector cleaner in the tank when there is a little fuel in it to make sure it is not diluted too much.

Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency
In Service Exhaust Emission Standards for Road Vehicles

MAINTAIN FOR ECONOMY AND TO MINIMISE EMISSIONS
Keeping your car properly tuned and serviced reduces emissions and fuel consumption. Useful guidance may be found at the Government’s “Act on CO2” website at www.dft.gov.uk/ActOnCO2
There are a number of routine checks every driver should carry out, with the help of the handbook.
♦ Check your tyre pressures. Under inflated tyres increase fuel consumption and can be dangerous.
♦ Check for fuel leaks and for air leakages in the engine inlet and exhaust systems.
♦ Check your fuel filler cap is on and fits well. You can lose significant quantities if a cap is ill-fitting allowing fuel vapours to escape. This can also add to the emissions.
♦ Check the condition of spark plug leads and connections (not when the engine is running).
♦ Check spark plugs and air filter at recommended intervals and replace if necessary.
♦ Check and monitor fuel consumption. Remember that different types of journey and levels of congestion affect emissions and fuel consumption.
Other maintenance jobs require more specialist knowledge or equipment. Check or have your garage check:
♦ Timing belt condition – worn or incorrectly adjusted belts can cause catastrophic engine damage.
♦ Idling speed.
♦ Thermostat – which can stick partly open so the engine takes longer to warm
up.
♦ Turbochargers, where fitted, for correct oil supply, cleanliness and freedom from blade damage.
♦ For older vehicles, as appropriate, the carburettor is clean and correctly adjusted, and that the choke linkage, ignition timing, and contact breaker points are correctly adjusted – all of which could contribute to poor fuel economy if poorly adjusted.

Jeeze, that was a brave move!. If I`d put one of mine behind the wheel, I`d have been lucky to see it back in one piece!:( (too much testosterone!)

She is a good but spirited driver. Very good anticipation and spatial awareness. I did ask her if she thrashed it. She said “no Dad, but it did get a bit of a ragging. Nice car.... can I borrow it again?”

Change oil and fliter, change air filter. Add injector cleaner as others have said and give a real good blast.
An 18 year old apprentice plumber driving a Sprinter is the fastest vehicle combination known to mankind. So just follow their example.

I always change the air and diesel filter before taking it for its MOT and give it a good blast on the motorway to blow all the soot out. Never use diesel additives. My 1990, Defender still on its original engine just recently passed its Control Technic without any problems.
I would also like to add my 2009 Sprinter with over 800 thousand kilometers has also just passed the Control Technic and has never had any diesel additives in its life.
