From 2005 -2011 and 2018 -
Are the running costs between the 3.0l engine (OM642) massively different to the smaller 2.2l engine (OM646) ?

The V6 is a bit thirsty but an absolute delight with the auto box. I probably get about 21-22 compared with a bit better for the smaller motor, but to be honest, in the great scheme of things it doesn’t really matter. At this level of spend, a few MPG is very small beans indeed

Since 1964 Gosh that makes me feel old.
Yes the V6 is a cracking engine, plenty of torque & very smooth, we have one in our Mercedes R Class with 265bhp on tap & I can't fault it.
The trouble is that the 2.2 is a seriously good frugal lump.
I still lament the departure of the five cylinder 2.7 diesel.

3L V6 5.4t around 21mpg. Last van 2.8JTD Fiat 3.5t around 22mpg. Frontal area and cruising speed much more important than engine size. I cruise at (a genuine) 65mph. All the above A class vans.

We used to have a Rapido 3850kg on 2.2auto.
Averaged 25 mpg and that include tramping up and down some serious mountains in Morocco.
