Suggestions please for aires/overnight parking within walking distance of the Menin Gate
Thanks

You can park along the wall and visit the gate but no overnighting.
There's a campsite nearby but not cheap.
I can't remember where we stayed overnight but nearby and Free of course.

Jeugestadion campsite and aire. We stayed on the aire which is actually on the edge of the campsite ….it’s only a short walk through the park to the Menin gate. You can book the aire to avoid disappointment if it is full when you arrive.

Zillebecke lake - drive past the Aire, then past the hotel and continue along the lane to the end and there is a free parking area, no services. It's about 20 mins walk into Ypres.

The British used the area for RnR during WW1, but it was often shelled by the Germans. One of the shells killed my great grandfather and his name lives on, on the Menin Gate.

We stayed there about four years ago and left a couple of laminated 'reports' of his death. I doubt they will still be there but it seemed appropriate to tell, if only a few people, a little bit of personal history.
We drove into Ypres and parked on a street and walked in. Or you could even get a taxi to pick you up and take you back!

The campsite is very near and is only €20 per night at this time of year!
Highly recommended, there is a “stellplatz” bit to the campsite which is a bit cheaper but we prefer to pay a couple of euros more and go into the campsite itself.

We stayed here last week. Nice walk in of about 15 minutes and €9 inc electric. Services were €2.

Was very good! 👍

Don't misunderstand me and I'm not being trivial but those 54,000 who were killed and whose names are engraved upon the Gate paid dearly.
My point is that I've been to the service at the Gate a couple of times and the experience is moving and terribly sad, but I wouldn't let any charge keep me from going to pay my respect.

Second this site 👍👍

I know the campsite is reccomended, however, the Aire is actually within the bounds of the site, you pay at the same reception. The Aire is more or less flat and hardstanding on block pavework whereas the actual site pitches are sloping, very small, and some inaccessible if you have a sizeable unit.

We have stayed at this Aire and agree that it is good. However, my wife, who has had bilateral knee replacement found the distance taxing on the return journey. It also took her more than 15 minutes.

For anyone without these restrictions it is a good stop.

I have a number of relatives commemorated on The Menin Gate and more are in cemeteries near what was the front line.

Martin not keen on going but I'd like to visit and say "Thanks Uncle".

There is motorhome parking outside the college which is about 400 metres along by the river. Stayed overnight along with others without issue.

Down from the gate along the wall to the endvof the road is leisure centre/ swimming pool. With a large car park across the road on the corner. We stayed there for a couple of nights and were not disturbed ,but it was about 4 years ago ,but no facilities.

Coincidentally I’m looking just now for 1 night mid July. Although I like the idea of a lake I’m thinking the campsite aire may be handier.

I think you are taking it out of context.
We have visited the last post service many times over the years and even stayed in Hotels in Ypres.
He was asking about various options for staying the night nearby in a motorhome

Possibly, but my somewhat emotive comment ref your reply of somewhere 'cheap' to overnight was with regard to the OP's wish for an overnight stop to visit the Menin Gate rather than an enquiry for general sightseeing of the area.

My apologies if I was out of order.

I should have said, it’s about 15 minutes at a good pace. Apologies.

I've stayed here twice, as has been said there is an aire as well as touring pitches, it's a ten minute walk to the gate and a little further into the town square with the museum, restaurants chocolate shops etc. There is also a place near the gate which does battlefield tours if you'd like someone to drive you and explain what was happening and where. I personally think every school should organise trips here so children can grasp what happened and the sacrifices that were made.

Stayed at the aire on the side of municipal campsite last week. It’s a less than 10min walk to the Gate, and only €16. But some places sloping. Also sloping in campsite that is more costly.

As above, we stayed at the campsite/ aire, but we experienced the night time blast furnace from the recycling plant opposite, similar to a 747 on takeoff. I spoke to a few of the campers the next morning and many not bothered, may only affect light or sober sleepers! Just be prepared as there are no viable alternatives - handy Aldi nearby.

Hi.
We have been and i was not keen. I feel guilty being alive and well, while they have gone. A close neighbour was on the short straw and jennifer asked why i had not gone around to see him,as i told her,its a personal guilt thing,i can stand up and walk away into another day and there is my guilt. Is that understandable.....
Tea Bag.

There was noise when we stayed there. Not terrible but constant. Ok for our winter stay, but not so during summer, or for sitting outside.

Just being there and reading through some of the names taking in the solemn atmosphere it is an unforgettable experience.
What those names represent, the personal sacrifices made for our freedom is something we should never forget and ensure every future generation understands where their “right to be offended “ was born

The thing that got me are the names are just of those that have no known grave, not all the soldiers lost around Ypres, it is an extremely moving monument and ceremony.

Hi.

I feel grateful not guilty. This will sound embarrassingly trite but I celebrate being alive and well by taking opportunities to help others, whether something minor like asking a stranger if I can help by carrying their shopping or changing an elderly neighbour's light bulb to running fund raising events for Macmillan Nurses or the Air Ambulance, to helping out at the animal rescue centre to stopping to see if I can do anything to help a broken down biker at the roadside.
Who knows, the stranger who is helped may well be a descendant of one of those tragically lost relatives who couldn't.
I'm sure that many of us do the same and get a nice warm feeling from it.

Hi.
So do i...... Its just these people who have gone or who are going are beyond my help....... Gratefull..Yes to the fallen. Sad for those i cannot help. I have gone the extra mile for people and still will, but being around death.....Been a Pall bearer for a mates wife and thought it an honour, but, I don't like going to hospital myself.. and i have had my life saved three times here in Portugal. Being bedside, god forbid, will be reserved for those nearest and dearest . Its just me,my hang up... Take care.

My great-uncle is one of those who has no known grave. He was killed on 15 Feb 1916, at The Bluff, Ypres. His name is on panel 21 of the Menin Gate, and also on the war memorial in Saxmundham, where his brother-n-law's name is also recorded. My mum and nephew have visited the Menin Gate. I'd like to take the van to Saxmundham at some point.

We are booked on there for our visit in June

Us too!
We stayed there previously in 2019 and it is a great location.
Slightly concerned about some recent reviews that say it is noisy at night due to the local recycling factory.
I don't remember any noise during our previous visit so I assume the factory is relatively new.
