Hi all , I seen this and was wondering what the tech folk think ,just thought it would be easy to attach to the side of MH
I have a avtex with built in sat receiver

my MH Is large at 5 ton and solid so doesn’t really move about to much , would only be used in the U.K. ( mostly scotland)

thanks in advance , kd

Well......

Put it this way, I see a lot of second hand ones for sale “ As new” ..?

Hi. IMO 40cm is too small it is fiddly to set up to find a signal from the satellite.

Sky consider scotalnd needs a Zone 2 dish which is the bigger of the ones they do. the other thing is if you cannot get line of site to the sat stuck to your van you cant move the dish it into the clear.

i have tried loads over the years. and always go back to a stand alone tripod with a quick assemble dish and the best sat finder meter you can afford.
it is more bulky but IMO unless you intend to park always with a clear view of the satelite i.e not in the shade then its also more practical ( and considerably cheaper ) that the roof mounted types.

i can set mine up in 10 minutes max normally.....

i use a different size dish with all the same peripherals for south of France.

however, the new ... trial for us now is " internet" TV over MIFI or tethered to phone via an Amazon Fire stick in the avtex tv. still carry the sat dish at the moment though

Thanks phill , I’m not to good with all that stuff , how does the fire stick work with data

I use as others a cheap dish I bought form Aldi with a tripod from Ebay and have done for years.Advantage is I don,t have to worry about the position of the camper and can move it to suit.Works fine all over Uk and Northern France.Sat in camper at Le Touquet watching a gut with a roof aerial going round looking for signal. He gave up and came round to see if my dish which was about 20 feet away was working which it was,Ended up him bringing round some beers and watching the football match he wanted to watch on our Tv!Also an Avtex!!

I bought a cheap dish kit from amazon connected to an Avtex Tv. about £35 came with more cable than the kit I ordered so got a bonus.
Used to have it on a tripod,
I now clamp it to the cycle carrier or an angle bracket bolted to the front towing eye.
i use Dish Align app on my iPhone to point the dish works really well.
it’s surprisingly easy to get the dish lined up although you have to be more accurate for HD channels.

With mobile coverage improving all the time surely you will be better off with an android iptv box and forget satellite.

it very much depends on what level of stream you set things at. as the fire stick is Android based

have aread of this article it will give you a better view than me trying to squeeze the info into a thread.

Ok , I’ve gave up on the satellite, the info above has me now wondering about streaming, I’ll start another thread regarding mifi and Firestick etc

thanks for all the input

SKY completely changed the footprint of their satellite reception quite a few years ago & the smaller dish is perfectly adequate for Scotland, it has been for some time, so ignore the soothsayers.

Suction mounted in Scotland wouldn't be my preferred option though, even some of the little gusts which blow out of nowhere are enough to pull the dish off the side of your motorhome, so IMHO I wouldn't go for that option.

Dome or crank up are far better but, even these you'd have to make some choices.
The crank up & manual search are IMO the best option, just witness how often we read on this very forum of huge difficulties folks have with auto search satellite domes.

Hope this is helpful/useful mate....Robert.

anything that sticka up off the roof like a sail IMHO is bad news in real bad weather and needs to to wound down to avoid possible damage to either roof or Dish mechanism, and its generally bad weather you want to watch the TV.
so for me if i was going to stick with a sat dish ( and i still use one, but playing with DATA ) it would be
1st choice , stand alone on a tripod i could secure and move around to suit location,
2nd choice , but only if absolutely staying in the Uk and northern France a sat Dome.

I've got a suction dish I used to use when we had a coach built. Worked fine. You can have it for £35plus postage.
