Ok so we’ve bought a hymer exsis i588 currently 3500kgs gross and with the current plate 3900kgs max. I’m presuming we could go to 3900kgs as a max with out modifications?? However without going to svtech etc at the moment can anyone tell me the max gross weight we could possibly go to with mods like bigger (16”)/higher payload tyres and air suspension. It’s on the fiat lightweight chassis and hymer alko rear suspension with updated (comfort) suspension on the front.

Not sure what the 'current plate' is ... it is either 3500kg or 3900kg - what's on your V5C?

If it is 3500kg and you want to uprate it could be the same as it was for our Carthago which is also on the light chassis with an Alko rear end if you fit semi-air on the rear.

For us, once we had the rear semi-air suspension fitted, we were able to go to 3850kg as the rear axle capacity was increased from 2000kg to 2240kg, however our front axle remained at 1850kg. If we wanted to raise it to a higher capacity we would have had to fit some additional/better suspension to the front (not sure what your comfort ones are) and then could have gone up to 4000kg (might have been 4005kg) but as there was no way we'd have been able to make use of this additional capacity at the front we didn't bother. We already have 16" alloy wheels and 225/70/16 tyres so they were able to take the increased capacity.

Hi thanks for that info. I can’t decide what to do really. I’m going to load up with everything we normally use inc fuel and half water.....even the baked beans and beer!! I reckon if I weigh the motor then with us in , I’ll get an idea of how far over we are. It’ll cost a small fortune I think as we have the torsion suspension and air for those are about £2k I think. It’s been a minefield trying to get sorted with a Motorhome we like and the hymer so far is in a different class , to what we’ve had.

I think you will find the max you can go to is 3850kg. Biggest problem with the Exsis is the water tank is behind the rear axle.
We had an Exsis I 678, we upgraded but were always on the limit on the rear axle if we had kept it we would have fitted rear air.
We traveled with full tanks plus an extra 40Lt of water in the garage ours was the slightly older model (2014) had a stupid tiny 100Lt tank, 2 e-bikes and all the normal junk.

If you have 16“ wheels you shouldn't need to change the tyres to uprate the axle.

The Plate on ours says

5,500kg
1 1850
2 2350
4000kg

so from that I think the max is 4000kg , with limits on the axles: 1,850 on front axle and 2,350kg on rear. And when towing, no more than 5,500kg MTW

I weighed it recently. Even with 1/4 tank of water, full gas, full diesel. Lots of added extras and some gear in the garage. A lot of payload left. That said, with us two on-board, the front axle may be nearing its limit.

I was surprised at what payload there was. Hymer B644

GiveSV Tech a call they will tell you and won’t charge if you don’t uprate, Steve is very helpful😊
there are other companies available👍

Hi thanks for the info , we’re on 15” wheels . Im just waiting for a reich weight checker to arrive and then I can do some playing around to see where we go. Ultimately we may well end up selling due to my cock up with weight and understanding or not as the case maybe. im wanting to carry a small 125 motorbike and two bikes when we are eventually allowed to go back to Europe . For that I think I’ll have to go to 4500kgs . Thanks again

My Exsis-I 2018 model is plated at 3500kg with an option to go to 3850kg without any mods.

Fully loaded we can just about work with the 3500Kg limit as it's only for two of us. We do have to be careful with what we carry. At the weigh-bridge with 20 litres of water, a full tank of diesel, 2 * full 11kg Gaslow bottles, me in but empty of other kit, it weighed 3160Kg. With all our normal kit - kitchen, bathroom. tools, ramps, cable, hose, camping table, chairs etc that weighed at 3260kg.

To that I need to add Mrs AB, food, clothes and bikes etc. It's very tight but it works for us - we could plate it up as we both have the C1 licence but we pack it depending on where we are going so we don't take anything we don't need.

We have loads of factory fitted extras on it plus a 2 * 11kg Gaslow system and a solar. No awning - we though about getting one but at 40Kg I don't think we'd use it enough to justify the weight penalty.

Sounds pretty similar to ours , we do have solar and satellite fitted we have alugas fitted (which I believe is slightly lighter). a Lot of people from other sources keep saying do this and do that , but ultimately I think probably the best thing to do is load up and then go to a weigh bridge , if we’re over the permitted gross weight , then it’s either unload something or upgrade .

Your main problem is going to be rear axle weight limit. With a Maxi chassis of 4250 or 4500 the rear axle will be 2500kg some are upratable to 2700. Best to go for a van with a long wheelbase and short overhang best to get a van on the weighbridge before buying. My mate has a Carthago E line on a 4500 chassis he is always right on the axle limit where as our Hymer we have 200-300kg spare & we carry a lot more than him.

I think it's already been said but as you are on 15"wheel's your rear axle will still be 2000kgs unless you change tyres for a higher load rating.
I believe that The extra you gain from going to 3850 is all on the front axle.
Which to be honest is not a lot of use.

There's a weighbridge on the estate along Melmerby Green lane, we've used it a couple of times. It up off the A61towards the A1 where you go over it to Thirsk.

We have the Sunlight T66. I had that upped to 3700kg, which along with some extra chassis rails under the garage area also gave a useful 100 kg uplift to the garage area to 250kg. [ Check what your allowed]. We have the Honda Wave 110i in the garage. Move all the heavy stuff forwards if possible, stuff like the jack, and tools, they now live under the sink area. We don't get close to the front axle limit, but are close to the rear limit, but, I can go back for another bite of the cherry with a possible uplift , [ with some changes to tyres, and suspension] to 3850kg giving 2240kg on the rear axle. Luckily, our water tank is midships, so it loads the front axle more than the back.
Similarly we both have the C1 category, so might at some time also look at a van with a higher starting payload, but were happy with this for now.
Mike.

If you have comfort suspension on the front it’s likely the same as our B678DL 4500kg with front axle max 2300 for us it’s useful as there is a bit of extra stowage space up front with deep floor box,I don’t know if you have that on the Exsis?
On our old Exsis I 698 front end stowage was pretty grim not much space up front at all and always difficult to shift weight forward to use any extra payload.🤔

The rear semi-air suspension will cost somewhere between £1750 an £2100 (possibly more) due to the Alko chassis.

Agreed, if he changes the wheels to 16" and tyres to 225/75/16 they will be sufficient to carry a weight uprate on the rear axle to 2240kg I believe, but obviously it won't be a cheap fix along with the semi-air.

Don't need to change the wheels just the tyres to 225/70/15.

I was quoted £1750 for rear air suspension on my Exsis on Alko at AS Air Suspension in Warrington.

Hi just thought I’d reply ref the weight situation. I loaded up our i588 and with spare wheel 20litres of water 2 electric bikes etc etc a d clothes ,we weighed in just 80 kgs short of 3500kgs. The beer from Morrison’s took us over I think. I’m going to go down the 3850kg route I think . Just to be safe.
