I’m just going to pre order a Max fan, can anyone tell me if the thickness of the roof is a problem as far as fitting is concerned. Also I’m going to fit a fridge fan, having read posts about them I’m going for a CBE, problem is finding a supplier with any stock. Any thoughts, please.

the internal trim ring on maxxfan is quite deep & can be cut down. I had to reduce the height of mine so that it fitted ok.
I've st found this ;
he MAXXFAN is designed for a minimum roof thickness of 1 1/8” to a maximum of 6 1/2”. If your roof thickness is less than 1 1/8”, build additional thickness at the ceiling opening using wood or other suitable material.

I had to cut a little off the inner cover very easy to do as it’s thin plastic a ruler and a sharp box knife 🔪 did mine on. It’s easy to do. On the fridge fans I’m like you. Want to fit one 🥃👍😷

Thank you both. We have a Carthago so I assume it's a thickish roof.

Don't buy an expensive fridge fan set up, you just need a 120mm computer fan (or whatever size fits) and a 45°c normally open version of these to control the temperature...

Much better to get a proper temperature controller you can get cheap bare board ones for under 4 quid or decent ones in cases for a tenner.
The problem with using thermal switches is that each fridge installation varies and it is a problem selecting the right temperature switch, I gave up with them years ago.

Here is my install.

And my internal fan install.

You adjust the temperature by moving the sensor left or right in the fins. I've found that it's best towards the left (cooler) side and 45° cut in. Never needs adjusting again.
The quiescent current draw is terrible with the bigger boxed controllers, (those Eliwell copies) i forget the exact figure but it's upwards of 100ma. The mini digital stats are better at 30ma or 60ma if relay pulled in.

My 555 and TIP32 transistor circuit uses 3ma 😍

Mind I am a bit obcessed with things that use power for nothing... In a good way 😎

We had a Max Air fitted to our Auto Trail V Line as the depth of the insulation was too thick for a Thule or Fiamma.
I as so glad that the Max’s skirt had enough depth as it is far better/ quieter than the other two that we have had over the years. Set on 10 or 20% extraction it is very quiet. We have the Max Air with the remote controller, I’m not generally lazy but it is a feature I like.

To mount the thermo switch did you bond or drill to fix to the fins

Mine's different to that but I'd put it in something like a piece of tube then wedge it in so it can be moved if necessary.
Also if fixed to the fins directly you'd probably need the 55° version

Make sure you buy the right size
Standard is 14 inch which is US size
European size is 400 x 400mm which is different

I’ve ordered the Max fan, just got to decide where to put it.
I am going to have to buy a ‘proper’ fridge fan as I’m don’t want to touch the Motorhome electrics myself. Reading past posts, it sounds like a CBE is the way to go. The only seller I can find online is in Italy and that means it may be delivered by early June. Has anyone bought one in UK within the last couple of months, as like many things imports are struggling with delivery.

I don't know which model of Carthago you have, but the roof vent over the kitchen area in our C Tourer 150 was pre wired for the extractor fan. We fitted the Maxx air fan there, and had to trim the interior section down, also we had to make a slot for the cabling to go through as it needed to be the opposite side to where the pre fitted wiring was. Still a straight forward job to fit. Just be careful when screwing the fan to the roof as it is only thin fibreglass.

I bought one of these which I can adjust to a suitable temperature for the fridge and it works well.
I am currently using a small computer fan but will upgrade with a pair of fans for the roof vent soon.
