For Route planning also try Viamichelin http://www.viamichelin.co.uk/web/Routes.

for Aires I use Campercontact .. I find it more user friendly than Campingcarinfos .. and the reviews are translated into English, download the POIs for your sat nav free http://www.campercontact.com/en/

also has a phone app .. both IOS and Android.. oddly called Motorhome Parkings .. costs £4.5 per year, it has downloadably maps that can be used off line.. useful abroad

Tyre to Travel is a very good route planning program allows you to add push pin stop overs etc it works in conjunction with Google maps and you can download the route to your satnav.

I would suggest at least get a GPS system to go with your maps, its the 21st century and the Chinese ones are a few quid on ebay. Will save you a lot of hassle and headaches and just punch in the coordinates from campercontact as Scotjimland recommended.

thank you for your recommendations, we are only going for a week so can not travel too far south, may be a couple of nights minimum at each destination, which was your preference? I will look at the areas.

hi zoomer, all 3 are nice in there own way ,
catillon nice walks /cycle ride along canal.village ok.
giffaumont lovely cycle ride around very large lake no town unless you go to main aire but thats not free.
geraudot very rural but nice walks .
we only stay 1 night at each , for us thats enough.
hence my handle fidget , I don't stay more than a couple of nights anywhere unless its a rally.

We have stayed on the aire at Catillon sur Sambre, nice little aire - water and electricity available. Very quiet village though, when we were there in September 2014 we only found one shop and that was a pharmacy. There is an overflow aire across the road from the canalside aire so you are always sure of a space.

In the resources section you can download 'about France.com' (there is also one for Spain, if interested). The website shows best toll and non toll routes across France plus much more relevant information.
This will be of great help to you when planning trips into/across France/Spain.
Safe Travels.
