So last time we headed off to Spain by road, back in November. the 238 mile journey from Manchester - Portsmouth took us a shade under 8 hours. It should take around 3½-4 hours.

From Santander - Javea 520 miles, took us just 7 ½ hours.

We were supposed to meet with Friends in Portsmouth for dinner, but we had to cancel.

British roads and the number of accidents is crippling the country.

Just don't know how much longer we can cope.

Don't go down the M6, M40!......Northwich, Whitchurch, Shrewsbury,Bridgnorth, Kidderminster, Worcester onto the M5 at Jnctn 7 exit Jnctn 11A, Swindon onto M4 then A34.

Might not be that much faster much more relaxing and passing through some of the best countryside in the UK, can miss Shrewsbury and go via Telford as an alternative.

Never done Portsmouth in much under 5 hours with a break and that was in the pickup 70/75mph at night from Heywood, 7 hrs via above route with a couple of stops, why rush:).

Lots avoid the peages in France supposedly to see the countryside, how many do it in the UK?

We travel from Cottingham (E Yorks) to Eurotunnel (254 miles) and it can take as little as 4.5 hours if we go like a bat out of hell or as long as 8 (only once when the strikes were on at the French ports so the motorway was clogged up with vehicles) but the vast majority of the time its around 5.5 hours which includes stopping for dog walking/coffee breaks and lunch.

The M6 Was Closed
Alderley Bypass had road works at the end
Queued to get through Congleton
THREE Accidents on the A34

So many people have to much time in the world. Usually to use their phone or chat to passengers when sat at a clear roundabout.

Hi Trev

i haven't been in Alderley for a while. Good to know they have finally built the bypass. When was it finished?

We live along the coast from Portsmouth about 245 miles to Manchester anything under 5½ hours in a car is a bonus how you can expect to do it in a Motorhome in 3½ hours is beyond me.

Oops sorry, 19:02 19 Nov 2010. So GMT.

OK thanks

I have been there since then but just driving over from Macc to Alderley to see friends so would not have encountered it.

Do you live in Macc itself or nearby? I lived in Bollin Grove, Prestbury for a year when flying from Ringway, but was at kindergarten in same road 43 years earlier!

As an alternative to Trev's (teemyob) route to P'mouth either from his place or yours I would go Leek-Ashbourne-A38-M42-M40-(off at J9)- A34(nearly M/way)-M27. But it is horses for courses.

I always assumed motorhoming was about taking your time and seeing the world or your part of it. Leaving home tomorrow, booked on tunnel Tuesday lunch time. Don't care how long it takes as long as there on Tuesday. Will stop somewhere on way, somewhere we've never been. Lifes complex enough without rushing. Rushing does you no good.

But motorway driving is so much cheaper in UK - how many peages are there?
& slower. Far slower. A bike is often qicker.

Where I go wrong is I allow 1hr to travel 60 miles. That was always enough. As things have advanced things should have improved & become quicker ,not regressed to horse & cart timetables.

November 2010, about 90 years after it was planned (seriously). There have been a lot of nasty accidents since then.

Now we await the SEMMS relief road (was the A6M) that was planned around 1957. That has been delayed 6 months due to rain!.

And one day, we might get the Poynton bypass.

I too think travelling by road is slower than it used to be. King's Lynn to the A1 at Newark along the A17, about 57 miles, used to take us an hour, these days we're lucky to do it in ninety minutes and that's with a few bypasses open since the early to mid nineties.

Can't guarantee this route will be much quicker but it is certainly better than sitting in traffic on the M6 etc.

I use the M56 and A556 to get to Tabley, depending on where you are in S. Manchester you may have a shorter route.

Follow A556 to Cuddington
L onto A49 Dirn Whitchurch watch out for L turn at traffic lights near Tarporley.
Whitchurch by pass A41
Prees Heath roundabout (services, chippy)

Either A49 Shrewsbury then A458 Bridgnorth ( watch out for signs as not direct turn )

Or A41 dirn Telford,
A518 Telford
A442 Bridgnorth

From Bridgnorth A442 Kidderminster
A449 Dir'n Worcester onto M5 at Jnctn 6
Exit M5 11A A417 Swindon (Birdlip was notorious hill, steepish but OK now)
M4 Dirn London
Exit Jnctn 13 A34 Newbury
A34, M3, M27
Portsmouth.

Can be busy round Shrewsbury etc at peak times but we take the opportunity to stop and have a cuppa:)

I bought my first car in 1964. The only occasion when it might have covered 60 miles in 60 mins would have needed Beachy Head to be much further above the beach.
