I work full time but do get a few days a week off due the nature of my job and have just bought a Pick up truck as a 2nd car. Handy for DIY been able to throw stuff in the back and I needed an extra seat as my daily driver is a 2 seater.

So I thought hey I could maybe offer a man with van service to people I know in exchange for a bit extra cash now and then.

Stumbling block is it takes my insurance from £550 to £1500!!!!!

I don't intend to earn an extra £1000 over the whole year so it's not really worth it. But if I could get an insurer to accept that I have a full time job and only intend to do this say once or twice a month at most and only with stuff like B&Q fence panels then I could maybe get a better premium.

Anyone done the same or know any insurer that will look at stuff properly? All the ones I talk to just seem to do the standard computer tick box stuff and come out with sky high premiums which is nuts for my plans.

If I can't get it under £1000 I'll probably not bother.

If you only use it ONCE a year for a fiver, it's still 'use for hire or reward' ie Business use and must be insured as such in order to be legal on the road that once. Nobody knows when that is hence you have to have the cover all year. End of story!

Don't think you can really have it both ways. If it's mates rates trip to the tip, cash in hand, then it's not really business so insurance not so important, if it's helping with house removals and the load is potentially expensive to replace, then you need suitable insurance.

I get that. That's not my query.

My query is are there insurers that WILL think outside the box and cover me all year understanding that the risk is minimal as I work full time (with wage slips to prove) and will only be doing the odd job now and then. So there extra say £500 fee over £1000 is still a safe bet. After all this is nothing more than the insurer gambling on risk.

On a tick box computer says no I could work 7 days a week as many hours as I can stay awake and they would still charge me the same as what I propose. I need a broker that does an actual job over a 20 year old call centre minimum wage push the buttons muppet.

I realise they can't know when and how I will work but some applied common sense surely can still be had in this world.

I have just insured my pickup for business use with three named drivers for £550 at the nfu, mind you I thought that was bloody dear and still negotiating to get it less.

Also is that including goods in transit insurance? Usually you have to let them know what type of stuff you're transporting ie fine antiquities or sacks of coal as the insurance will vary.

To get what you want, you'll have to talk to the underwriters directly or via a specialist broker.
I suspect what you want/need just isn't worth it for them to take the risk for a lesser premium.

many many years! since I was a kid
i would be inclined to get a quote as business insurance, not hire and reward as that is not even the same category. my pickup is insured as a commercial vehicle under £500 but I had quotes for £1600 from some firms for social, domestic & pleasure. depends what you ask for and what you class the use as. say its for transporting customers goods and they think courier. say part time handyman and its far cheaper
