Arrived at the tunnel on New Year’s Day, through our passport control, then gas check, then French passport control.
Asked where are we going, Spain said I, how long? Seven weeks, are you aware of the 90 day rule? Yes said I, you are missing a stamp on both passports said she!
Crossed for 43 days from 1st May, stamped in and out.
Crossed for 21 days from 4 th September, stamped in but not out!
French lady then went away to ask for advise, held our breath for 5 minutes, then she came back and said ok enjoy your holiday. Phew!
Memories of getting to the port at bilbao and being told we could not board as the vet had miss dated billieboo’s passport!

Presumably they went to check the electronic record but it would have been a lot easier if you had been stamped on the way out. There must be an electronic record otherwise how would they know if your passeport had been renewed since the last trip?

When we came back through the tunnel at the end of October early Sunday morning there was no one at all on duty on the French side so I had to get a UK border staff member to escort me back to the French side to find somebody with a stamp! I doubt there will be an electronic record as our passports were not scanned.

If that was the case anyone can stay as long as they like and order a new passeport! It could be true but sounds very unlikely.

It’s going to get even more confusing interesting for those U.K. citizens who shouldn’t have our passports stamped due to accompanying our EU spouses!

The new scheme is supposed to be starting in May. Fingerprints, iris recognition, hamster's maiden name etc.
Provisionally....I anticipate further delays.....past experience has shown me that many "glitches" will have to be ironed out before the system runs as smoothly. as The U.S./ Canada/ India.

Cue posts asking to 'borrow' Brittany Ferries code and name of Hamster.

I've been thinking about that. My confusion first arose during the Covid restrictions on entry and transit through Europe when I realised I was ok as my wife has a Danish passport. Anyone know what the procedure is when there's a seperate queue for EU and non EU? Perhaps I'll stay with the wife and plead ignorance.

We’re likely to be together in the vehicle and have no immediate plans to fly anywhere, so that scenario isn’t likely to occur for us, but the marriage certificate and copies of previous ferry tickets etc. will be to hand.

As far as I'm aware, the launch date has been put back to November 2023 (https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/etias/). I think it's down to someone forgetting to tell the ports etc. they'll need a bunch of new kit for scanning etc.

The out stamp is the only ne you need to worry about.Never leave or move without one.

Now you would think that but when I left the Uk in august as soon as they saw my TIE residence card,no one looked at any of the passports or anything .just handed the whole lot back. . so I am probably still in the UK.
It would only be the UK border lot who can possibly tell if a passport has been renewed.
If anyone was stuck with an "in "stamp but no "out" the easiest way is to renew passport.

As a Resident of a EU country I positively do not want stamps going out of or into EU/Schengen.

As a British Citizen i also do not need stamps entering or leaving Britain.

As a matter of interest does anyone know the procedure applicable to an EU Resident in a Schengen country when travelling to an EU country which is not in Schengen - e.g. France to ROI?

This is somewhat relevant to us, so why shouldn't "UK citizens ... have ... passports stamped" please?

I did say when entering and leaving UK.

That is because a British Citizen has the right of free ingress and egress from UK.
Ah, I see, thanks. I didn't want to lead you on: I suspected wrongly that your comment was linked to the question whether non-EU spouse can always accompany an EU passport holder. And the answer there (as I understand) is 'no', basically the 90 day rule still applies.

It's the EU/Shengen doing the stamping so take it up with them 👍

Because if they are travelling with an EU spouse they are classed as the same & the passport for the UK citizen should not be stamped.

I don't know what law you're relying on (and I'm willing to be educated) but the UK citizen surely needs stamps in case she/he is out of the UK without spouse at some time?

Couldn’t agree more! Sick of arguing the toss politely explaining to French border officials who just don’t have a clue. All they know is that they have been told to stamp all UK passports, so as far as they are concerned, there are no exceptions… well yes actually there are! 🤬

EU officials do not stamp at UK immigration control posts.

I know it is confusing for some people at Dover/Calais because the UK and French posts are operated on different sides of the Channel, but one only has to look up at the post's name and also at the Officer's uniform.
