I’ve been using iPhoto and Photo to store my digital photo’s and do simple editing for as long as I’ve been taking digital pics; but Photo isn’t a suitable application for archiving.
Is anybody using another more professional alternative? I’d rather pay for a reliable solution than fret over a “free” one.

depends on what you mean by archiving. if you shoot your pics and edit using jpeg format you have already degraded them for archiving as it is a lossy format.

you may want to look at lightroom from adobe or other adobe programmes. I use photoshop and lightroom it's what the pros use. As for a cataloging application then any will suffice as long as you can edit the photo's metadata

I use TimeMachine back up to a local hard drive - 3 TB. I have an Apple storage package but I have too many hi resolution photos to use it for everything - costs me 80p a month for loads - sorry cannot remember the storage amount.
I also re file all my shots, folders - year, place etc, etc on my computer which doubles up the security aspect.

I use lightroom for organising and editing too, have used it for years. Use photoshop for more extreme editing
I’m sure you could buy an old copy of lightroom cheap and give it a try, I believe these days you need to subscribe to adobe cc suits if you want the newest version but I’ve never felt the need
Lots of tuition available on YouTube and brilliant stuff on creative live

Thanks for the replies, I suppose “archiving” is too grand.
These days I take photo’s to use as reference material for paintings.
I do not shoot or store in Raw format, and manipulation in Photoshop or a similar bit of software isn’t my thing. I edit in paint.
Maybe Lightroom would be worth a look.

I’ve just looked on eBay!
I think presets loses me!
Maybe I need a clear out of “snaps” and a fresh look at my iMac.
