2:51pm 13th August 2018
(Updated 3:29pm 13th August 2018)

Drivers taking to the M25 on Sunday (August 19) could face heavy delays because of a huge National Grid transformer being delivered.
The 143 tonne transformer is being taken to the West Weybridge substation in Byfleet.

But it will take around 10 hours to travel clockwise from Clacket Lane Services to its destination.

At 68 meters long and 5.3 meters wide the transporter carrying it will severely reduce traffic flow, occupying two lanes and travelling along at a whopping 12 miles an hour.

It is due to set off from the services at 6am on Sunday morning before arriving at the substation at 4pm that afternoon.

There could also be disruption for those in the Ottershaw, Sheerwater and West Byfleet areas as it exits the M25 at Junction 11.

It will then continue on the A320 south until the roundabout with the turning for the A245 and follow the A245 and B385 on Woodham Lane, before turning right into Pinewood Grove, left into Parkside and into the substation entrance.

The National Grid say the new transformer is needed to continue to deliver electricity to homes and businesses across Surrey and beyond.

Aleksandra Zefirova, National Grid Project Engineer said: “Our network operates smoothly, safely and efficiently over 99.9999% of the time – a statistic we’re very proud of.

"Millions of people rely on us to supply their electricity without interruption, day in, day out and so it’s important that we keep our substations and the equipment in them working efficiently.”

The journey for the new West Weybridge substation transformer will begin at Tilbury Docks in Essex on Friday evening, before a more than 24 hour stop at Clacket Lane services during Saturday to minimise disruption.

A hotline has been setup by the National Grid hotline for anyone with enquiries and you contact them on 0800 019 3235 between 9am and 5.30pm.

It was certainly informative. I'm hoping this round up of news from the south of England is going to become a regular thing here.

Getting better
Nice to read stuff about the area where I spent my mis spent youth.

The M25 is never a delight but it looks like it’s worth avoiding as this transformer moves about.
