Getting there owner since 2021
I'm just about to take the plunge on a refillable gas bottle but not sure about the compatibility.
Do Gaslow and Gasit use the same filling system? I'm currently looking at a Gaslow direct fill 11kg for £185 as I don't really want to start drilling holes in my mh.

Direct fill means no holes in the van. You have to connect the filler directly to a connector on the bottle. The connector supplied will be the UK standard bayonet connector. Note that lots of places don't like directly filling bottles as too many member of the public have been using dodgy ebay kits to refill Calor bottles, which don't have the fill level cut-outs.

You won't have a 'hole' in the m/h but a proper filling point. Presumably you're happy with the existing water fill, EHU and ventilation body fittings.
If I ever transfer my system I'll fit an unobtrusive plastic vent grille in place of the filler point.

Thanks for the replies. I assume the fittings will be legit from
If anyone can advise better or cheaper I'd appreciate it. Trying to get organised before a trip next Monday as my gas is low and no point in getting a refill if I am going to swap.

You've got me swaying now. I assume the filling point is easy enough for a DIY job?

I bought a direct fill Gaslow 11kg recently. I got it slightly cheaper from Rainbow Conversions. But they didn't include the filler adaptor, so it ended up costing me more. £185 is a reasonable price.

I got it filled at the local LPG dealer that also fills up the taxis round here. No issues with them filling the bottle directly once they were assured it has an 80% level cut-off.

I fitted my Gaslow system in an hour including a brew half way (and I only have use of one arm and hand). I did spend half an hour with the bits thinking it through first - run of the pipe, clearance behind the filler unit etc. The only 'special' tool you need is the hole cutter for the filler unit. Measure twice, cut once so forth. I fitted one refillable with one of my Calor bottles to keep my options open.
I did buy the Gaslow leak detector but after all it's no different from making connections when changing Calor bottles.

The kit. Before starting............

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I phoned Brownhills and they assured me it gas an 80% cut off and they can get it to me by tomorrow or Wednesday at the latest, so just went ahead and bought. I might go for the conversion kit when I've more time.

Our local Safefill dealer fills them up whilst you wait.

We have two (as picture above) although we have a built-in regulator with a change-over tap.

Best gas arrangement we have had in 30+ years.

I made the same choice. Due to the current shortages, I couldn't get hold of 6kg propane cylinders. So I got a direct fill Gaslow bottle as an interim measure.

Long term, I'd like to get an underslung, but I couldn't find anywhere that'd fit one this summer. Or I can just go back to Calor. The Gaslow bottles seem to hold their value fairly well, so I could sell it on. Or I might eventually get an outside fill point for the Gaslow.

No holes drilled in our van to fit this exterior filling point (y) ………

That looks to be potentially quite a dangerous setup TBH. If you're involved in a very low rear impact or even if you just clip something when reversing then the gas line will fracture.

I would reposition it to the side and get the drill out asap.

Fitted by the authorised dealer. It‘s set back from the rear bumper, mounted on a metal plate. Can’t see it being any more dangerous to the ones fitted coming out the side plastic of the bumper. 🤷‍♂️

It's not a problem there is only a bit of gas in the pipe between the inlet and cylinder.

And I don’t travel with the gas switched on. (y)

However, even if you did have the gas turned on none would escape except the small amount of gas in the fill pipe because the refillable cylinder has a non-return valve.

I'd try and avoid having the filler point in the locker door - pipe flexing every time you open it. Just maybe a cause of early failure. Mine's in the skirt below where it looks like a "fuel" filler (to fool some of those places that object to filling bottles.

Also use the stainless steel braided pipes.

I took a pic of our PVC when we were having a travel break today. We like having the parking agility which a PVC affords so having a clean rear end (now that sounds rude) does help.....

.....so having a refill point just bolted on to the rear in such a precarious position as described before would have caused damage for sure.

Everyone to their own though:

I don't see what difference it makes as would be almost flush with the rear.

A huge difference Lenny.....Having a single vertical metal plate protruding downwards without protection is asking for trouble.

From a PVC perspective it just doesn't make any sense.

What metal plate, you normally mount the small square style filler in the bumper. Sticks out about 3mm and nowhere near the bottom of the van.

Took me less than an hour to fit an 11kg Gaslow with external filler last weekend. Thd filker is hidden behind a reflector on the bumper.

Yours is longer than mine……. ;) When I picked up the van I questioned its location, they said they put most of there Gaslow exterior fittings there.🤷‍♂️ If I attached my tow ball, that would hit anything first.
