We ran out of gas yesterday morning so we went to fill up the 30ltr tank expecting to put in about 22/24 LTRs but only got 14 LTRs in. Anyone got an idea why and what the problem is Thanks kev

Probably not as empty as you think. Gauges are pretty inaccurate. We filled up yesterday a d only managed 15 lts. They have an inbuilt cut off. Try pushing in the cut off button on the regulator, it’s green and hold it in with a stick.

It may be a defective pump, I have experienced that in the past and so have others on here. Try another pump.
You say you ran out so presumably actually empty and not relying on an inaccurate guage.

No we started to boil the kettle then had no gas to the gas hob. After toping up with gas everything was back working again

It could be the lpg pump had run out,iv had that before.

You cannot fill a lpg tank to its total capacity it has to have room for liquid to expand.
The OP was quite correct when he said he expected to get 22/24 ltrs in.... 80% of 30ltrs = 24ltrs.

Is it possible you have two tanks and one was still full but turned off?

The only things running on gas was fridge and hob

I think Raul
might be right

Ive long suspect that garage fill stations have various pressure settings and some will switch off earlier than others.
I always seem to get more gas in at my local commercial gas shop

These have been mentioned on the forum before "Mopeka" sensors - may be worth a look at.

In my experience I've never got in as much as I thought I should, I read somewhere that the pump will cut off when the cylinders are at 80% however i think the pump slows right down before it gets anywhere near that and I get fed-up holding the button down with gas trickling in, the gauges show full though so who knows.

I thought it was the cylinder, not the pump that controlled the 80% cut off.

Every LPG pump I've used for the past 18 years have had different cut off pressures, some won't even start a fill, some require patience for the liquid to pressurise from the storage tank to the pump. Just keep holding up the fill button and eventually you'll either get in the 80% fill or get bored 😂

I'm sure it does and my Safefill bottles have a float switch but there does seem to be differences between supplier's.
I don't know why

I bought a 13kg Safefill bottle from a Funster
I tried to fill at Morrison’s Morecambe Saturday am.
I connected the gun, turned it clockwise and pulled the trigger to lock.
Then opened the valve fully and kept the red button pressed on the pump.
It took 13p but the bottle is almost empty. Released the gun and reconnected and tried again and got 9p worth.
What did I do wrong?

After you lock, you supposed to let the pressure equalise, then press the button to fill.

Almost certainly a duff pump
As it went to half full I would go to another garage and fill again :-)
30 ltr tank should take about 27ltrs from empty

I experienced something similar the first time I tried to fill my gaslow cylinders, the problem was that I hadn't pushed the gun on hard enough before i turned the lever i thought the gun was locked on correctly but it wasn't and like you i only got a few pence in.

Normally a sign of regulator failure .
Try running your heater if it’s gas powered and then light oven and hob burners .
Any sign of dropping flames should confirm if you have a problem.
Could also just be as others have mentioned that some pumps do seem to cut off early.
