Just popped into our local Sainsbury’s garage and asked why the LPG pump was not working. They told me the pump is out of gas and will be permanently removed at the end of the month. Then replaced with petrol/deisel Pump.

How long before garage forecourt LPG is no longer available or at least hard to find?

What do you think?

The lpg pumps are being phased out in favour of electric charge points

Ever since lighting was by Calor gas.
It seems to depend on the area in the U.K. Plenty in continental Europe.
As said, some are being removed and EV charging points being installed. BP are in the process of removing all their LPG pumps.
References to LPG availability in this recent thread..........

Autogas points are now being taken up by some campsites. My nearest is Henlow Lakes Camping. Easy access and normal prices. This makes sense when those of us who use garage forecourts might buy 20 litres of gas, may require help with fittings and block car access. Cars etc will tend to serve themselves and buy a much greater quantity of fuel. Autogas users, motorhomes, will more often be found in a camping environments so there is some logic in moving from Fuel stations.

Yes the LPG market has changed significantly over the last couple of decades, very few cars are now LPG powered , this decline began in the early 2000s .

BP pulled out of the LPG market in 2015 / 16 followed by Shell in 2020 when they wound up Autogas a joint venture with Calor.

There are still independent BP and Shell franchises that have LPG.

The good news is that more Leisure businesses are actually now installing new LPG pumps as the Leisure industry has seen a massive increase in refillable LPG tanks / cylinders.

So whilst their has been a significant decline in the number of LPG pumps overall, it’s certainly never going to completely disappear and in fact with Leisure vehicles it’s a completely different market as it’s small volumes and often infrequently refilled , once you get used to planning ahead it’s not a problem at all , especially with the way Calor have been with regards to cylinder shortage for the last few years.

We have our own LPG pump onsite and stock a massive selection of refillable LPG tanks and cylinders along with leisure vehicle gas regulators etc .

Morrisons Supermarket with a filling station usually have an Autogas pump. Morrisons has an agreement with Safefill but if you have another refill system I can’t imagine you will have any issues.

Phoned the St Ives Cambs store on Sunday. None available and they only hear 2 hours before the truck turns up when it is due.

Strange the reason given for withdrawal is down to replacing them with EV charging points because the EV points I've seen are away from where the petrol, diesel and lpg pumps are I.e on the main forecourt.

EV points should be away from other fuel pumps should there be a spark. To fill a tank takes a few minutes to charge an EV for approx 100 miles takes around 20 to 60 minutes blocking the drive through style of most forecourts.

The BP by Dover Western Docks is where I put some in when staying in UK. It's 13 miles from home. It's very handy for Eastern Docks and the ferries. Have been twice recently and there has been no LPG. The pump can be accessed from both sides. The manager says that they have to check the levels and never know when the tanker will arrive.

They are still advertising 99p a litre.

While some fuel stations are taking them out, new ones are being installed.. around here a few taxi companies have installed them. Also read of places like marquis now offering LPG.

As I have mentioned many times Morrisons Forecourts down south don't have LPG, except for the one near Lenny, so I guess they may be scared of him.:giggle:
Autogas that supplied Shell and the likes, are also being slowly stripped out, only 2 garages that I know of had them in Surrey/Hants, but I always check to see if they are still selling it, or if the pump is working before I get the van out.
I hope more leisure outlets install LPG pumps, especially campsites, who knows they may get more pitches filled up in winter if they are open:giggle:.
Flogas seems to be the company that is still supplying gas to petrol stations, fingers crossed we will find one en-route somewhere out there.

I think we need to accept pumps are becoming scarcer but doubt it shall reach a situation where it becomes impossible to obtain. We are mainly electric, so only use gas for heating, so we fill the 150L tank once a year and forget about it. However, the last fill was at 99p/L and can now be obtained at my local filling station for 69p/L if I had not filled up it would of course be around the 2GBP/L by now :-(

I’ve never actually been to Henlow Lakes, but live in mid Beds, so really useful information!

I’m assuming the pump is easy access? Is it something you can use as passing, or do you need to be checked in and staying to use?

We have a flogas depot a couple of miles away, so just keep an eye on levels and pop in to fill up before or after trips. Can’t see that facility disappearing unless the company does.
