Just getting some prices together for a new mattress. Its a near side French style bed. Current one on is a pocket sprung. Feels fine still but its up to 12 years old if never replaced. Figured a new one will feel not only better but certainly cleaner.

Question is whats best? Are pocket sprung mattress's better than a full memory foam? They certainly seem to cost more but its that just down to the fact there is more engineering involved and not actually a better quality?

Going right back, I can remember 'French bed' mattresses having a wedge of mattress that corresponded to the wedge 'missing' on the open side of the bed.

What that allowed the owner to do was turn over the baulk of the mattress on a regular occasion to get a more even wear.

I would imagine that would come in useful when the couple were of the 'Little & Large' variety.

Might be something to consider if ordering a new mattress.

I have but not sure that would work as it sits on sprung slats currently and lifts up on actuators to access storage under the bed. Would take a bit of work to make a tray to fix those too I think

as I recall ours was like yours but the froli were on straps which made it easy to fit .

Pocket sprung - it is the weight that is the problem. We went for memory foam from customsizebeds similar to your coolblue. Been very happy with it as it has kept its shape despite my 16 stone svelte body.

Interesting wedge infill. Do all French beds come with those? Not sure I’ve seen that kicking around the soon to be my van

4" foam with 1" memory foam on top..in a zipped removable cover...
was very comfortable

Made an extension piece out of ply as I am six foot two and sleep on that side. They (customsizebeds) gave me the offcut but finished it off. This bed keeps you cool because of the top layer.

I fitted the Froli system to our beds which were slatted and also lifted to give access to storage. The Froli stars are attached to a plastic mesh which zip-ties to the slats. Mesh is cut to accommodate lifting portion of the bed. We love the system with a good mattress. As good, if not better, than home.

We had a memory foam mattress at home for a long time. I never got on with it. Although it felt comfortable when you laid down and for the first 10 minutes, it would then started to feel unsupportive once you'd sunk into it. Always felt lots of effort to roll-over to climb out of the divot that had formed around you. I'd always wake up with aches and dead arms. It was also very warm in the summer.

We changed it to a well rated quality coil spring. To keep the guarantee, it needed a mattress topper on it, so we had a thin memory foam topper... mistake. Took that off after a couple of months and just put on a thin pad instead. More comfortable and cooler. Although I still don't sleep brilliantly. Also doesn't help that my other half wriggles a lot and, even though it's supposed to isolate movement, it doesn't.

For the van, we bought a cheap basic, plain firm foam Ikea mattress and hacked it up to make it fit. Lying on it, it doesn't feel all that special. And the base is just plywood with holes drilled in it. But I don't think I've ever had a bad night's sleep in the van (apart from a time in Luxembourg where we parked in a car park and people were drifting their Mercs and BMWs round us all night long!). I always wake up feeling refreshed.

We also got a cheap'ish mattress for the spare room. That's got a sprung bottom layer with a thick foam pad over the top. All our guests say it's really good.

I'm totally not convinced by expensive mattress technologies.

My understanding of memory foam is it moulds to your body shape, which in my experience meant a trough that I couldn't stop myself rolling into. Hated it. They may not all be the same, indeed I'm sure there are some that don't 'mould' but I won't risk another one.

Surely it has to be pocket sprung every time. So long as you get a good one.

Grasshopper Leisure have it at an outrageous price.

I got mine from Germany for about £15 last year but unfortunately things have changed. It is merely a heavy duty, flexible mesh. I suspect there are some very cheap alternatives if you know where to look
