Morning,

I have been looking for a cheap 4x4 and have narrowed it down to the following.

I would have liked a Toyota Land Cruiser Amazon but they are quite pricey and most very high farm miles.

Mercedes 2002-2005 ML. I like the ML400 but only left hand drive and cannot find a decent one (I think they did do them in 7 seat unlike the AMG ML55). I think it will have to be the 270 diesel. Lots around and a very good engine. V6's are thirsty, may as well have a 5 litre V8. But I would want to go LPG and it seems they don't like that, something to do with variable timing?.

Anyone had one or have any opinions?

BMW X5: AWD, older ones cost £500 a year in RFL so I think thats out.

Toyota Landcruiser:

Bit agricultural, cannot seem to find anything in the price range of the above ML?

Any thoughts or suggestions welcome please?. Maybe I am not thinking outside the box?.

Since May 05 (Ex Tuggers).
I imported an Isuzu Bighorn Lotus 7 x seater, a few years ago.
It was a bit of a beast with the 3.0Ltr Isuzu small truck engine. It was a great tow vehicle, and was very reliable. I used my neighbour's Vauxhaull Monterey chassis and engine numbers (essentially the same vehicle) to get any spares I needed, as Isuzu wouldn't supply for a grey import. The only reason we got shot, was because we bought the MH to replace the caravan.

I did look at the Toyota Surf 3.0Ltr, but couldn't get the rear door model I wanted, within our budget, at the time.

@TeeMyob. Good luck with the search Trev. (y)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Hi Tim,

We previously bought a MY16 Toyota LC with electric foldaway seats in the boot and as you say it is/was agricultural. That was one of the perks as you knew full well that it would get you from A to B, unlike a BMW X5 which struggles with an icy surface in Tecso's car park.

We got rid of it when it reached 3,000 miles (yep, three thousand) because it went for its first service and some highly trained Toyota technician forgot to affix the new oil filter correctly.

I discovered his mistake on the way home. The Toyota LC is a fantastic bit of kit but apparently it doesn't work well with no oil in the engine - funny that!

If I needed a big lump again then I would certainly have a Toyota LC.

All the best,

Andrew

The Mitsibishi Pajero was a fairly bullet proof unit. The Jap spec cars can be picked up for relatively low money these days.

Both 4wd, both available with 7 seats.
Better fuel economy than traditional 4x4 and arguably a better drive (y)

I have heard bad things about reliability?
I love my Discovery and it’s just so capable. I certainly wouldn’t have any other 4 x 4. Yes it can be expensive when it goes wrong but then so can motorhomes.

If they are looked after and serviced regularly then they are no different to any other vehicle as regards to reliability. I’ve had my current model for 5 years and I use it daily.
