I have some family going to Luss on the banks of Loch Lomond next month and I said I would find a site to book in to and come visit them.

CC isn't showing an awful lot. I know the site at Balloch but don't fancy it. Surely there must be some other sites in the area??

I would wild camp if there is nothing else but would prefer to get plugged in some where and make a bit of a holiday of it.

Any ideas?

The CC have a cl on the other side of the Loch at Balmaha, you'll also find another couple of sites there I think one might be forest holidays.

The camping and caravan club have a site at Luss.
There is a site Tarbet a few miles away. Lochlomondwoods

You can also camp in one of the designated camping spots in the national park.......£3 pre booked online.
These places have no facilities but are recognised overnight places.
There are a two or three on the same bank as Luss.

Muckle thanks people, after your suggestions I have went for both the permit for the Firkins site for 2 nights then I have booked in at Lomond woods holiday park for a few nights after that. The wild camping spot is only 5 miles away from where the family are staying so I can easy cycle there to meet them.

Should be a giggle!

There is a nice C&CC site at
Milarochy Bay G63 0AL

It’s on the non A82 side of the Loch, is less prone to traffic noise than those on the main road side.

The site is right on the Loch side with direct access to the water.

According to the blurb, although it’s a members site non members are welcome (but you pay more)

We have stayed at Firkin Point on the Permit Scheme

There are three places on what was the turning circle at the end of the cul de sac road. They are not marked out but indicated by a 4ft post with a sign on. The tarmac is on a slope and the top and bottom pitches you can get level, the one in the middle is transverse to the other two and may have to use ramps.

There is direct access to the cycle track that runs alongside the Loch that will take you to Luss, as you say, it's about 5 miles.

So the Firkin Point stop over was perfect for what I was after. Easy to find and the Loch itself is literally just behind the trees in the above photo. Beautiful spot.

Picked my van up from Edinburgh and the lovely weather we have been having for weeks now continued all the way across to Glasgow and on to Loch Lomond. I kid you not though, the very first bit of rain I have seen in weeks spattered off the windscreen the moment I turned the engine off. Heard the thunder in the distance so stayed put for half an hour eating a knickerbocker glory.

Had to go see the family though so I gave them a quick phone to see if it was raining further down the Loch at Luss. No was the answer I got so unlocked the bike and headed the 5 miles down the cycle path. Couldn't escape the rain though and boy was this rain! Absolutely soaked through, roads were flooded, cars were crashing and the thunder and lightning was getting close. Good fun none the less though. The cycle path is brilliant. Very easy going and it pops in and out of the wooded areas to go road side every now and again. I noticed designated camping markers on this path itself so I am not sure if you can get the vans down there to park right on the shore or whether it was for tenters only. I'll be looking in to this.

Plenty activities to do through out Loch Lomond. Water skiing, jet skis, canoeing and kayaking, mountain biking, Loch tours, speed boat tours but I chose to treat my niece to a flight on the sea plane that takes off from Cameron House hotel. I absolutely loved this. We took off and headed West over Helensburgh. 10 people on board and you all get a headset so the pilot can tell you about everything you pass. First up was one of the nuclear subs being escorted up the Clyde by some tugs. Now I have family there so it is not the first time I have seen this but from air you can see the extra protocol that the navy take with their minesweepers and a destroyer patrolling the further area. Seems you can tell if the sub is armed with it's deadly payload or not as when it is, it is being escorted directly by a lot more than a few tugs. Pilot told us that there is SBS teams that shadow it's every move.

We didn't get too close in case we spooked the security so headed off over the Isle of Bute - Rothesay, Greenock, Gourock and out to Dunoon with all the different Lochs in between. Beautiful to look at and a lot of history to. We were advised when we were flying over the stretch of water that the damnbusters used to practice with their bouncing bombs and we passed the resting place of another sub that had sunk in 1945. Turns out sailors from this vessel had managed to escape from 200ft below. (a record that still stands from escaping unaided from a sunken ship). We were in the air for about 30 minutes before turning for home via one last fly by the nuclear sub so the guys on the other side of the plane could see it this time. Landed back on the Loch 10 minutes after that and that was it. Highly recommend this.

It's about £100 per person and although the website advises you to book ahead, we found there was still spaces only the day before.

Moved on to Lomond Woods holiday park in Balloch after that for some chilling out. Nice enough site though can be a bit noisy at times what with all the motorbikes that love the Lomond shores roads. Plenty options for eating out although I chose fish and chips from a wee shop a 5 minute cycle away. (always a good sign when it's queued out the door).

I'm not one for taking pictures but I'm getting my sister to send me some so I may add some of the sea plane later.
