Hi. 2.5 TDI 1999 Ducato.

I am needing to change fuel filter hidden behind near side huge air filter housing.

I do not have water level sensor, just the white screw on drain at the bottom ( although I have loose blanked plugs nearby so maybe it had the sensor at some point?). Reason? Since breakdown guy came to look at my rough runner and immobiliser light he unscrewed drain cap and this now leaks do I thought keys change whole filter as comes with cap on bottom and only £15 today from ECP.

I know I need to prime with diesel after replacing so......
A. Does it help to pour diesel into filter before fitting?
B. Where is the priming bulb I am expecting to find? Couldn't see on first inspection?

Many thanks all .

as far as I can remember (which isn't a lot these days!) you don't have to prime it, spinning the motor over will fill it and prime it pretty quickly.
of course someone with greater knowledge than I will be along to give more info.

While you've got the filter off and considering the age of the van, why not treat it to some decent injector cleaner, the type that goes in the filter, not the tank (Forté ?)

I am aware of all the additives for fuel tank, but not for filter? Please explain?

Yes it does self prime but worth filling filter with diesel before fitting

In case anyone else views this thread in future. The 2.5tdi from 1999 does indeed NOT have a priming lever or bulb.
Half filled filter and turned over for maybe 20 seconds and started.

Pretty sure that by 1999 the 2.5 had been superseded by the 2.8 idtd although externally they are almost indistinguishable from each other.

I won't disagree with you but change overs are never that clear cut are they?

I'm sure my first van was a 2.5 at 1999.
Later 2001 was a 2.8.

99 reg doesnt mean the 2.5 was a '99 manufacture though.

I have recently changed the fuel filter element on our 2005 2.8jtd and yours sounds very similar. Is it mounted on the nearside behind the air filter and is it entirely black plastic, if so I watched a video of Dave Newell doing it just recently. Not difficult but the bodies do split apparently and its best to hold it with the correct plastic tool.
it also has a white plastic drain screw. I put it on dry and it just refilled itself. Was surprised that the internals were very clean , no water or grit or anything but I felt better when I had actually looked inside it.

Mine was twisted on really tight and the cannister is a metal body. I almost gave up it was so tight!

Thats a different type which uses a metal filter a bit like an oil filter. Mine is/was the plastic body with an replaceable internal element
I found it wasnt too bad once I had decided to remove the air filter and took the oppurtunity to replace the italian hose clips with ones that I could deal with at the side of the road if I had too!
