How far apart can you place batterys then link them together.i know ideally they should be next to each other.It would be just two batterys in total

Any distance you want really, it's the thickness of the joining cable that matters. There will be a formula for it, someone will be along that knows. As you say the nearer the better but sometimes it's not possible.

As said, use a calculator tool , positive cable should fused at BOTH ends with a fuse sized to suit the cable size..
it would also depend whether you plan to use an inverter, if so you must use the max current that it will draw when sizing using the tool
