Our first camping car was also a mini traveller. However I used to get a LOT more on the roof rack than you appear to have managed John!
Including a folding travel cot for our JULIA who is now 36.
Strangely enough it would also have been 1981!

Back in early eight's we had a cortina estate, seats down that was a twin bed, sleeping bags, tailgate up and cooked under whatever the weather, we thought is was great.
Different every night , didn't do much in winter tho, went all over UK, and a bit in France for the booze and fags, 200 cig limit them days, sometimes stopped at Dover and did the hovercraft a few times a day for the cheap fags.
Return trips were two quid.

Few days down there, filled up with fags an beer etc

Now a non smoker and a bit more civilised apart from a fridge full o beer in MH

Turn up wherever, turn of ignition, swing seat, open fridge.

HEAVEN

Bed fairly early and move on

We first went tent camping in 1980, the year we got our first car. We camped each year until 1988 when a combination of two house burglaries and the (then) car being written off meant we changed our plans. I never went tent camping again but Jill and the lads continued to go to ECWS re-enactment events with tents.
