I'm about to renew my 70+ driving Licence. Does the following (copied from the Online Application) mean I cannot renew online? My Motorhome is 3500kg. My Licence current has an entitlement for A, B1, B and BE.

If you have entitlement to drive:
  • Minibuses up to 16 passenger seats (not for hire or reward)
  • Minibuses on a voluntary basis (if you passed your Category B test after 1.1.97)
  • Medium sized vehicles between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes (and trailers)
and you wish to retain this entitlement, you cannot renew online. If you do not wish to retain this entitlement, click 'Next' and DVLA will renew your car entitlement only.

I believe if your only going for the 3.5ton licence ,this can be done online, it’s only where you need to have a medical you have to do paperwork

As I read it you can still drive your MOHO if you renew online, so unless you need to drive a minibus, you will be fine. If you don't have C1 on your license 3500 kg is all you can drive anyway. When did you take your driving test?

I understood that I'd need a C1 on my Licence if I wanted to drive a MOHO over 3,500kg.
Yes that is right, and as far as I know if you decide on the future that you need the C1 it is possible to get it back once you have had the medical. At the moment renewing the C1 seems to be a problem in lockdown, so if you don't need the C1 renew online and save the stress.

Do you want to drive a motorhome over 3.5T? If not, you can renew online.

Looks like you're even older than me and at 76 I've just reinstated my C1 entitlement, though I dont know yet whether I would step up to over 3.5T MH.

My Licence currently has an entitlement for A, B1, B and BE. Which of these gives me an entitlement to drive a MOHO?
As far as I’m aware because of when you took your test you should have a C1 category on you licence ?? You should perhaps get in touch with dvla and make enquiries

The OP took his driving test in 1959 which makes him at least 78 so this could be his 3rd licence renewal since turning 70 and it looks like the C1 entitlement was dropped off on one of the previous renewals.

Presumably the C1 was on the licence due to grandfather rights at some point and it should be possible to reinstate C1 at any time upon passing the necessary medical.

Possibly this is not the OP's first renewal since reaching the age of 70, in which case the C1 will already have gone from the licence and an online application will be fine

I sent off for my license to re-new at 70 and to retain C1, included medical form (need to re-apply every 3 years from now on) and I received a new one back within a week.

I renewed my Licence a few years ago, before I became 70. I'm 78 now. The C1 bit was removed on the renewal and I didn't notice as Motorhom'ing wasn't on the agenda then. I'm not looking at going any heavier than 3,500kg so I guess it's not a problem. So if A, B1, B and BE doesn't preclude me from driving my 3,500kg MoHo then I'm happy.

If you renewed it before age 70 it only lasts until age 70 or + 3 years whatever the licence says.So it should have been renewed at least twice since the last time?
Renewal only lasts for 3 years AFTER the age of 70.
