we have taken our car in for service today and been lent a courtesy car, we both need to drive it so both went in and had to have our driving licences checked

the garage have kept the printouts for now, but we will have them back when we get our car back on Monday

my query is that my licence appears to have a lot more entitlement than Bevs, but specifically she has

C1+E and I only appear to have C1, so in this area I appear to have less entitlement??? o_O

Medium-sized vehicles
Category C1
You can drive vehicles weighing between 3,500 and 7,500kg (with a trailer up to 750kg).

Category C1+E
You can drive C1 category vehicles with a trailer over 750kg, but the trailer - when fully loaded - can’t weigh more than the vehicle.

The combined weight of both can’t exceed 12,000kg.

thanks Andy, never thought to actually check my licence :)

I do have both and more than you I think, although mine are not in the neat order yours are (y)

the real issue here is all down to Bev, she refuses to move on to a photo licence so still has old paper thing, serves her right if it is wrong

will have a good look at the printout though, see if there are any mistakes (y)

Am I missing something here? Your original post said you are missing C1+E but your photo of your licence shows you have it.
The blank line against C is the same as mine. Have you had a full HGV and let it lapse?

Had a recent discussion with someone who just renewed his licence... It came back without the c1 entitlement and he drives a vehicle which requires that...
I told him I thought you kept that till you were 70 and then required medicals to keep it...
Well it turns out that if you renew your licence you need to submit the medical forms if you wish to keep the c1 entitlement...
So at least when I have to renew in 2017 ill know I need to submit the necessary medical forms...
David... @DavidG58 If bev renews for one of the plastic photo ones she will need to submit the medical forms to keep the c1 entitlement...
Ta andy...

The code 107 relates to a test being passed before Jan 1997 and reflects grandfathers rights.
The weights relating to this are Max gvw 7500kgs and gtw of 8250kgs the difference being 750kgs but if the gvw of a vehicle is say 7000kgs then the trailer can weigh up to 1250kgs .

There's nothing on the DVLA website about this. My licence and DavidG58's and Techno's all show our C1 entitlement expiring on our 70th birthday.

I think Andy was making a specific reference to Bev's old paper licence, when forced to change it might come back without the C1 bit

It was me not looking properly, but when the garage did an on line licence check mine didn't have the C1+E mentioned, they print out a list of entitlements, another new system apparently since the paper copy of the licence was abandoned last year o_O

I'll take a look later if I get a chance but I'm fairly sure that happens
it has to one person I know when he put his paper licence in for the plastic... I spent a day telling him that it shouldn't have happened but eventually googled something which confirmed his take on it.....
Ta andy.
It won't happen if you don't have to renew your licence before that, but mine is due next year and that's before I'm 70

There is stuff on it... I can't post links on this phone but just google......
Loosing c1 entitlement when renewing licence...
It's discussed there... not just on reaching 70 but on renewal as well...
Unless you submit the medical forms..

The link works fine Andy, but it refers to a website discussion on the subject with no apparent definitive answer and the thread is from 2008. The last licence shake up took place in 2013. My licence was renewed in 2014 when I let my C category lapse. I still have my C1 + E. My wife who has never had C category, renewed her photo card last year and still has the C1 + E.

Take on board what you are saying...but as I know it happened to one person ill be careful when my licence is up for renewal next year...
If nothing else I've found a way of getting a link posted using the phone .

It is possible to change from a paper licence or renew a 10 year photocard licence online, it is not possible to renew any licence that requires a medical online. If the person in question is under 70 and has lost the C1 + E category on renewal then DVLA have made a mistake and should rectify their error.

https://www.gov.uk/exchange-paper-driving-licence

https://www.gov.uk/renew-driving-licence

https://www.gov.uk/renew-driving-licence-at-70

Note the last section in the last link regarding renewal online.

I have C1+E (grandfather rights) but can't seem to get a clear answer to what the total combined vehicle & trailer weight is that I'm permitted. Is it 8250kg or 12000kg? the Carthago is plated at 7499kg. Can anyone explain?

If category restriction 107 is shown in column 12 on the back of your photo licence then the total weight must not exceed 8250kgs, so that would mean a trailer with a maximum of 750kgs on a vehicle plated at 7499kgs (well, 751kgs actually but that would require brakes anyway).

https://www.gov.uk/driving-licence-codes

If it's an old paper licence, I've no idea. Are the restriction codes the same on a paper licence?

Renewing the 'photo' is just that . You are not renewing the licence . That has an expiry of your 70th birthday & " "Drivers already holding entitlement to drive vehicles of category C1 and or D1 and who have passed a car test before 1 January 1997, will only be required to meet the higher medical standards when the *licence is next renewed.*"
Which is your 70th.
I did hear though that people who are banned /suspended licence, when they apply for it back lose the 'grandfather rights' . How true it is I don't know.

If you passed your test pre 1st jan 1997 you are restricted to a total train weight of 8250kg.
This is endorsement/restriction 107 on your licence

If you took the test post ? ? 2013 you are restricted to 12000kg.
There is no 107 restriction.

In both instances the prime mover is restricted to 7500kg gross weight....only the trailer weight differs.

But if you passed your test post 1997 (or 2013), you wouldn't have C1 anyway, so you'd be restricted to 3500kgs because you'd only have category 'B' for light vehicles. You'd have to take an additional test for C1. I'm guessing you'd have to take a test for C1+E to be granted the higher weight of an 12000kgs

Agreed, between 1997 and 2013 after taking the C1 and then C1E you would still be restricted to 8250kg but rather than having aquired rights (grandfather rights) you would need to earn the right by taking the test.
The 12000kg limit only applies to C1E tests taken after 2013.

Also, I believe C1 grandfather rights is an absolute 750kg trailer limit regardless of van weight....ie: 5000kg van with 750kg trailer.

C1E is a maximum train limit of 8250kg....ie: 5000kg van with 3250kg trailer...or any othercombination only restricted by vehicle train weights.

just as it applies to a B licence and a BE licence.
B up to 750kg max
BE up to the tow vehicles train weight.
