There has been much critism of DVLA regarding renewing your licence at 70 with C1 entitlement. My wife sent hers off last Monday, new licence through the door today.Pretty good I think.

The DVLA problems on renewal at 70 are caused more often than not by an overstretched medical section.
If there are no medical issues then probably a quick renewal.

Glad your wife has got hers sorted promptly.

Yes the problems arise for those of us that need a medical referral for C1 at 70, otherwise just a straightforward online application. Glad your wife got hers do quickly and that she must be in such good health.

Just a point on renewing C1 at 70 ... it has to be done by post with the correct forms, medical report and eye test report ... it can't be done on line like the standard licence can.

Apart from your own GP what other docs can you use to do the D4?

You can use any of the private doctors that do medicals for HGV and public bus driving. They have to be done every year so these doctors are very familiar with the forms.
Search online using “HGV medical Berkshire “ or similar.

I've recently used d4drivers @ ÂŁ50 for medical. The doc will already have the medical D4 form. If you wear glasses for driving you need to show your latest prescription. Also, you need to present a urine sample so they can test for diabetes. Take a note of your current weight (Kg) and height (cm).

You also need the D2 form, available at post office or apply online to DVLA and they will post you one.

Send D2 + D4 + original driving licence and copy of optical prescription (if applicable) to DVLA. Turn-around is approx 3 weeks.

I used D 4 Drivers earlier in the year. Very efficient. Got an appointment on a Sunday which was perfect for me. Straight forward, ÂŁ50.00 and medical signed. Posted later that day (Sunday) and had licence returned on Wednesday morning with all classes on. A, B, B1, C, C1, C1+ E, D, D1,BE, C1E, CE, D1E, DE. Renewable February 2018 and every 12 months.

But, if you're just applying for a C1 licence it's renewable every 3 years.

My current licence allows groups AM, A (motorcycles), B1, B (cars), C1, C1E (3500 to 7500Kg vehicles).

This is such a comfort to read this, I've just received licence renewal, 70 in March.
Want to keep C1, enjoy good health and no need for specs so I'll be looking to using specialist doctor and renew C1 easily it seems.
This info above will help keep the blood pressure down, thanks guys:xThumb:

Any Doctor qualified in an EU country. Of course language could be a problem, but the particular doctor does international research and conferences.

I have just had my second renewal medical done by such a doctor. The first one produced no problems at DVLA.

OK, understand now. But the title of the thread was "Licence at 70", so just clarifying for those reaching 70 who want to retain their C1 licence under grandfather rights ie. for a vehicle with a MAM of between 3500 and 7500Kg. :(

Its cheaper by far to use a specialist doctor for medical and he will fill your forms in correctly..I paid ÂŁ40 for my medical and DVLA turned my application round in 10 days,,BUSBY.

Not at all just the C1!

That's strange. The only possible reason for the renewal every 12 months might be that DVLA need to monitor your medical condition on a more regular basis. Or they have got your medical records mixed up with somebody else.

They didn’t say, but that’s possible I suppose. Just wanted to point out that 3 year renewal not automatic.

Then, you must be applying for a higher category like D (buses, HGV over 7500Kg etc).
All letters are completely categories.
C, C1, C1E etc are, or in the main, over 3.5 tonnes usually commercial but not always
D is public service vehicles etc.
These are known as vocational licences. Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Normally no medical until 70 and then every 3 years,,.BUSBY.
You obviously haven't read my previous replies. To maintain my vocational licences, I have to take a medical every 12 months.
It enables me to drive heavy goods vehicles and public service vehicles.
If I only to keep my car licence then I can't disagree with you
