Hi, just a quick question..

If i want to drive a RV over 7.5t (i have the C1 entitlement on existing license), i know i have to take the Tests for LGV Class 2 , but do i need the CPC modules 2&4 , as i'm not driving for a profession and delivering goods etc ?

Hi there the simple answer to that is no ,if you are not do it for monitary gain .I took my class 2 first which enables you to drive over 7.5ton rigid and tow up to 750kg and then i took my class 1 which enables you tow over 750KGs.

Try and take your Class 4 (Car) MOT'd RV to a test centre and ask them if you need a HGV test to drive it, and if Yes, when can you take the test!

Total confusion lol

I am unaware of anyone being prosecuted for driving a RV of any weight for Social reasons with the incorrect licence

Just for the record HGV class 1, 2 and 3 have not existed for a number of years......now C1, C1+E, C, C+E.:)

The old class 2 &3 were merged into category C

What Eddie is alluding to for the uninitiated

You cant take a driving test in an American RV to drive an American RV and a PSV licence is no good either
Popcorn anyone;)

Cheers all..

I asked a training company, and found out as you've stated Category C for over a 7.5t RV (non professional use) you dont need the CPC modules 2 & 4 :)

The answer to your CPC question is no.
As I'm an old fart I remember being able to drive a many wheeled mobile crane on a car licence, the rules are noncence really.

Still learning since 2010
I've just had a quick look at the DVLA site and it doesn't appear to refer to HGV, LGV etc, but only uses the category designations such as C, C1 etc.
They even refer to lorries and buses, not LGV etc.
https://www.gov.uk/topic/driving-tests-and-learning-to-drive/lorry-bus

This is possibly so that a non goods carrying vehicle can be categorised under the correct licence requirement for it's size and weight.

What's the reason for that, LHD?
The reason is that the legislation lays down what it calls "minimum representative vehicles" for the purpose of the driving test.

For Category C1 that is "A medium sized lorry with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of at least 4 tonnes, at least 5 metres in length, capable of 80 km/h (50 mph) and with a closed box cargo compartment at least as wide and as high as the cab."

for a Category C it is "A rigid goods vehicle with a MAM of at least 12 tonnes, at least eight metres in length and least 2.4 metres in width, capable of 80 km/h (50 mph). The vehicle should have a closed box cargo compartment at least as wide and as high as the cab. "

I can't see even a car test being conducted in a LHD vehicle, think of the H&S
Unless it has changed recently, there is nothing to prevent a driver taking a car driving test in a LHD vehicle. I did a few of these when I was a driving examiner in Coventry

I took my test in a LHD Citroen DS Pallas on 12-5-1967. The examiner was so impressed with the ride comfort I think thats why he passed me.
