A Woosh bang
On Wednesday we decided to go for a short ride on our mountain bikes along part of the Suffolk costal path.. as we were preparing we discussed wearing or not wearing helmets.. we always wear them when road riding.. but it's a grassy trail with no traffic so no real hazards but we decided that it would be prudent to wear.. the day you don't is the day you wish you had..

Off we go, about 2 miles from home I was ahead and out of sight when I heard a cry for Help .. Help.. sounded like Jan was in trouble.. I though perhaps she had slipped into some nettles or bramble bushes which line the narrow path..

I walked back and found her on the path.. it looked like train wreck !! blood everywhere.. running down her face and she was laying at a funny angle.. she was crying with pain and when I examined her it looks like a broken arm.. and a very bruised face and nose.. but fortunately no head damage .. helmet dented on front ..

She had hit a pot hole, partly hidden by grass , probably a rabbit hole.. how I missed it I don't know.. anyway, she went over the handlebars and did a face first landing on the gravel path !

Face in a right old state.. nose and chin grazed and bleeding and arm swelling by the minute.. I got some water and cloth to help with the pain and wipe the blood away. After seeing she would be ok, I rode home to pick up the car to go back and collect her.. . fortunately we were near the main road, so only a short walk..

At Hospital , X-ray a shows wrist broken in two places .. so plaster for 6 weeks.. no more cycling for awhile.

Lesson learned, NEVER ride without your helmet. even when going slow and on a grassy trail or cycle path and you think it will be safe without.. don't tempt fate.

Getting Better
Hope she gets better soon and and is not put off from riding....

Falling over from walking is bad enough and any speed over that is dodgy....

Poor Jan. I do hope she makes a speedy recovery and her injuries aren’t too painful.

Sorry to hear about Jan's accident - sounds awful.

Hope she'll soon make a full recovery, although bound to dent her confidence to some degree.

Trust she'll be able to put the episode behind her.

Crumbs Jim! I do hope Jan feels better soon.

You are of course quite right .............. never EVER ride without a helmet! My son is an anaesthetist (and cyclist) and regularly deals with cycle accident victims who 'thought they would be OK' ............. some get away with a few cuts and bruises........others suffer life changing damage ............ and a few never come out of the operating theatre alive. The brain is easily damaged with just a little bump ............ It's a sobering thought :(

One thing that really REALLY gets me ................ is young children without helmets ..... their parents should know better!

Life includes risks, but some are simply not worth taking.

Yes, always wear a helmet.. Even if you do look a pillock on the bus.
... does the helmet make that much of a difference for you though? :D

Yep Helmet, and if you are going "off road" no matter how sedate!
You might consider partaking in other safety equipment , like maybe some kind of protection for the body (torso) and maybe a neck brace.

On and off for many years.
Hope Jan is more comfortable very soon.

Always wear a helmet when cycling - when I came off my bike I was uninjured but my helmet was split all the way across the outer shell.

Glad Jan is OK Jim. Lucky lady. You'll remember Broken Link Removed here 11 years ago. None of my family will ever forget it.

Martin's had a couple of spills when his helmet has been damaged. He cringes when he sees anyone riding without.

I had one fall when I clipped a low curb riding into a layby and came off and hit my (helmeted) head on the tarmac.

Don't be dead be safe!
