It's dead easy Bill.
One of the most popular and simplest to use in Linux Mint that comes in a few different "flavours". I use Cinnamon however Gromett tends to favour the lighter-weight version, XCFE (I think).

Have a look see at these and shout up with any questions, etc. There are a fair few of us using Linux more and more.
Gromett is, as you're aware, the oracle on it!

thank you it for my other computer i an seting it up for jay taking xp off will it fit on a strick and can i instal from a stick

Normally you can install from either a bootable dvd or USB stick. If it's an older laptop currently running XP it may be easier using a dvd assuming it has a dvd drive.
