I'm a newbie
Hi I'm a motorhome newbie so still learning.
Does anyone lend there motorhome to friends/family members ? Is it difficult to add - remove there name from the vechile insurance policy ?

I certainly would not, the problems start when it’s returned damaged or the cassette & waste tanks left full and van untidy or not cleaned inside, it makes life difficult to have to challenge close family or friends. 🤔😊

Nope, well not to drive. I’ve taken it to somewhere for my daughter to use for the week and then collected. It was spotless, she said she wouldn’t use it again as she was too frightened to use anything!!! It’s seven years old now so I’d let my son use it but he is heavy handed! Again he says no cause he’ll have to clean it😳. They get told if they would like to borrow that any damage is paid for And I’ve told them nothing seems to start below £500! I’m not so precious about it but certainly would Expect it to be treated with the greatest respect.

I can see some serious family rows if the van is damaged or not respected. Then you start with big issues and expense with the insurance company. Although most motorhomes are very car like to drive, anything bigger than a transit van can quickly catch out the inexperienced driver. On top of that you have the licence issues if the van is over 3500kg as most younger drivers have no C1 on their licence

Said right from the start we would not be lending ours out, initially as well as everything else used the C1 issue 3 of our sons has it the other does not.
No way would we lend them the van, don't worry about their driving or how they would look after it but especially after a couple of incidets on sites recently, would not want them worrying.

Always. I am pleased as I know the fun of motorhoming and that my kids can also have that pleasure. Both sons are named divers on my insurance for very little cost.
Unlike so many owners I don't regard it as my Pride and Joy but just a tool to be used (a magic carpet) in the same way that I view my car, washing machine, lawn mower etc.
It gives me more pleasure than looking at it on my drive when I don't need it.
So what if something's broken? It can always be fixed. I expect we've all broken something or caused a scratch or a dent at some time.
I bought mine to use now, not to fret about maintaining its future resale value.

Hi Ramsay, welcome to the fun house :p

Not a chance ... hubby's sister said when we got a new one many years ago she could use it for holidays ... never seen hubby's lips move so fast in order to say "no"! :giggle:

Yes, my daughter and family use ours (son is still trying to convince his wife to go 😂) Never had issue with adding onto insurance, think it was only £20 additional premium for the year. Cheaper to add on at start of policy so you don’t have any adjustment costs.
I have no problems with them using it, not had any damage yet and if it did could be repaired. Prefer it to be used rather than sitting on drive, if we are away in it they often come and use my car if needed

The problem with lending it out is that those using it probably won't realise that the fittings/fixtures etc in a MH are nowhere near as 'strong' as those in a home, the taps for instance often have plastic levers and can be broken off if used wrongly ... my Mum tried this many years ago and again last week when we went to the seaside for the afternoon  ! I won't be taking her anywhere in it again due to other issues too which nearly meant our trip was abandoned.

No. Won't even lend it to the OH  Well she does not have the licence and would be nervous anyway.

Her son has not dared to ask, and with three kids the answer would be thrice NO.

I think the poll is about 12 'Nos' to two 'Yes'. Should convince the OP.

Oh dear. We seem to be in a minority. Literally an hour ago our son and partner returned our motorhome after using it for a week.
We thought long and hard but reflected that we have been lucky/privileged in using in laws property abroad whenever we wanted. Lending to daughters with young children, no.
Anyway, it's had bugger all use this year and the wheels need turning.

Not this year for obvious reasons but in recent years daughter has asked to use it for taking her friends to Glastonbury. Absolutely no chance. I usually avoid the embarrassment by going away myself.

You must be joking, Syd! Never ever never even though we love our nippers and their nippers to bits it ain’t gonna work.

I bought my MH with the intention of letting my family use it if they so wanted to. I've only been disappointed once in the 9 years it's been "shared"; other than that it has always been returned to me sparkling clean and in good order. Insurance? No problem and no increase in premiums for my sons in law to drive. Mind you, it does help that they have clean licences!

I think lending houses and lending MHs are very different. The borrowed house is very similar to one's home. Not so the MH, where the systems and furniture are very different and require skills and knowledge to operate properly and safely.

Yes I know and I agree with you but I was just trying to demonstrate something we would like to reciprocate.

I always remember the tale of a son/DiL who returned parents van full of diesel. They were surprised that when they went to the garage that although the gauge showed half full, it still took 120 litres. Hmm - which other tank holds about 120 litres!!
