Hi folks I am about to change the 2 leisure batteries on my motorhome as one of them has given up the ghost. I was just wondering if anyone can tell me if the original batteries would have been Gel batteries as I was thinking of replacing the lead acid with 2Gel batteries. Thanks Ray

Hi Ray

Yes I think that they would have been Exide Gel, G80 most likely. Are they in the garage floor? if they are you need to be careful with the battery height, what age is your Flair?

Gel are excellent. Mine are nearly 8 years old and still in excellent order. Solar keeps them charged and during bad weather a hook up does the job.

Hi Martin 2 batteries are in the garage floor and yes I have measured them and the height is 190.I think that the Excide G90 will do the job. Motorhome manufactured 2005/2006.Ray.

If you are happy to pay the extra for the gels then go for it. For wet/AGM you should only really discharge them to 50% to avoid harm whereas with Gels you can take them to 80%. That fact coupled with the extra life (mine lasted 12 years) youā€™re likely to get from them makes it an easy decision.

I bumped ours up to 4off G80/ES900 so they were not sweating when I was running the inverter.

Like yourself Martin I have a 2000w inverter which I have wired into a socket in the bathroom so my wife can use her hair dryer if not connected to ehu. Did you install the extra batteries in the garage. Ray

On our flair I plugged the (3kw) inverter into EHU --- unplugged it if we ever went on EHU or genny---- that way everything 240 on van would work---- had 480 solar and two 230 varta batteries mounted in garage against front wall---- used battery box for spares and rarely used bits------- this worked out REALLY well for us---------- only things (if we could justify the added cost!!) That I would do differently is an inverter charger and gel batteries-------- this is exactly what we have fitted to our off grid cabin in the hills of Portugal!!---- sooo pleased with the solar system we put inšŸ˜ŠšŸ˜Š
