I`m a newbie
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I just read a forum about changing the lighting to LED`s. Does this mean that even when on an ehu the voltage to the lights is still 12v, cos I`m sure that 12v leds will not work thru 240v without a special transformer

Too long lol
You are running your lights via 12v not 240 is the simplest explanation. 240 is only used for 240 items

Your EHU will power your 12v battery charger and your 240v sockets. Your lights will run on 12v from your (leisure) battery. We swapped our 12v tungsten bulbs for 12v warm white bulbs and understand that the saving is 90% of what we would have used previously. IMHO, avoid bright white bulbs - they are too stark and white and tend to wake people up during the evening making sleep difficult.

Even on EHU most of your systems will be running on 12v :)

There'll be a number of systems that only work on EHU that aren't 12v. Namely the microwave (unless you have a rare 12v one, but most have 230v in their motorhomes), the fridge when you select 230v supply, the 3 pin sockets, the electric element in the water heater to name a few :)

Depending on what you have fitted in the motorhome in the way of an inverter if any, you'll mostly run the 12v system, hence the need to have good leisure batteries and possibly a solar panel to keep them topped up when away from EHU for any length of time :)

There'll be lots of Funsters along to give some advice I'm sure, but I monitor my leisure batteries to ensure they have plenty of charge for their task ahead and also have a solar panel to keep them charged whenever possible :)

Assuming you have 12v fittings, highly unlikely you will have 240v ac light fittings but you never know who had the M/H before you and if they did any alterations as I say very unlikely but check the bulbs currently installed and check there voltage (should be on the bulb) if 12v led will work ok however try and buy from a reputable dealer as some LEDs don't like more than 12v and can overheat so look for ones rated between 12/14 v

I had a caravan that had a couple of 240v light fittings as well, think a lot of the newer vans are 12v but that's why I said check to just be on the safe side as the OP didn't say how old the van was

Some of my LEDs fitted about 4-5 years ago have begun to flicker so they don't last forever.

If you're converting from halogen to LED it's not always straightforward, as LEDs have a different shape and the light fitting may not have been originally designed to accommodate them. I had to rotate and re-glue the sockets for the two pins on some of my light fittings before they'd take LEDs. If you don't want fluorescent tubes in your MH any more you'll need to buy a completely new light fittings for LEDs.

I see you say STILL in your post.

voltage to the lights is still 12v,

It will not change if the EHU is on, the volts to the bulbs will be constant. As stated by others this is normally 12v.

OP = Original Post:)
