Pretty sure this has ben done by someone here.

I would like to push some white LED strips between the top cabinets and roof lining and connect them to the fitted down lights, to throw light out along ceiling level.

Will I have any problems with connecting to say 1 down light to power about 1m of LED's ? or do I really need to connect to light switch if I can get the wires down to it ?

You can get strips of different intensity LEDs. I've had ones with adhesive backing that have actually melted the adhesive and the strips have come adrift (because they got warm). Don't have the specs for those ones at the moment but they had the larger LED chips on them.

If the circuit you are tapping into already has the original factory fitted lights just check the cable size as some of these LED strips can be over 10 watts a meter. If you have original halogen lamps then just change them to LED and you should have no problems.
