Is it possible to link your laptop to a small amp so that I can improve the sound output?

USB connection?

Mine does that by bluetooth as well. Need to check what facilities you have on your laptop. USB will almost certainly work with external speakers

Not long enough!
Does it depend on the quality of the sound card?

Not exactly what you asked for - but you can get a headphone amp to boost the volume of the sound... Fiio are a good brand... plugs into the headphone socket
I've got a Fiio A1
<Broken link removed>

These things can boost the volume but you can't really 'improve' the quality - you can change it via equalisation.

I was hoping to drive my old hifi speakers..
You could use any amp you have lying about and just get a headphone jack to phono lead cable

Have you got them wired to your hifi amp?. If so you can still wire from the headphone socket to that it's the way we listen to our echo dot all the time and Liz does that for backing tracks off the laptop.

If you want it through the hi-fi you really need to output USB and get a USB convertor. I have an expensive that takes digital, but also a couple of these Beringer interfaces for flexibility. They are very good and will also allow you to take the analogue signal out of the amp into the laptop.

They do another version in silver that will take the output from a record deck straight into the laptop. Other suppliers are available.

The sound isn’t great on my laptop either I use a Bluetooth speaker as the audio will be transmitted digitally bypassing the onboard speakers the speaker plays the audio in far better quality.
You could try one of those Bluetooth audio things that you can plug a headphone 3.5mm jack to rca plugs or whatever the spare channel is on your stereo. That would do the same thing as a Bluetooth speaker

If you're wanting to optimise quality of your audio playback maybe there'll be an option of adding a digital to analogue output for your application.

What external IO options has your laptop got?
Have you got a dual function 3.5mm jack on your laptop?

The great thing about optical digital outputs is that they can be integrated into laptops. They’re often disguised as 3.5mm audio jacks, and are actually dual-use. You can plug a 3.5mm electrical audio cable in to get an analogue audio output, or you can <Broken link removed> a TOSLINK-to-3.5mm adapter and plug it in

Or add an external sound card. Some discussed here
