I'm a newbie
My maiden trip with a MH abroad will undoubtedly be to France. I speak very little French and I'm thinking of buying an audio translator. The gadget I'm considering translates 40 plus languages, it certainly looks the part and if it does what it says it could be a worthwhile investment. My wife is very creative when it comes to sign language and that's okay for general run of the mill stuff but if an emergency situation cropped up we could be stumped and that is where I think a translator could be very handy . Just wondered if any one has an audio translator and what your views are

You can download Google Translate onto your smartphone. There are various functions in it, ie you can use the camera to read the written word ie a menu and it will translate onto the screen, or you can type in what you want to say and it will translate for you and even speak it. Quite a powerful tool, and best of all, its free

Cheers

Trevor

We use Google Translate App. Free and very simple to use. You can even use the phone's camera to translate a sign or instructions. Can be hit or miss, but generally very good.

Edit:- Must type faster

I use Google Translater, it's free and works very well, especially with the camera functionality, point it at French (or any other text) and it instantly translates into English, or something similar :D2

Google translate for me too ❤️

You can download the languages you want so it can be used off line. The speak function doesn't work off line though.

Try bonjour.... you’ll be surprised at how many will speak English back to you :)

Google Translate.

I used it with the mic and speaker to have conversations in Japanese, and the camera to read Japanese signs and menus.

Pretty amazing.

You could try an App called 'Bixby Vision' too. This allows text to be translated and place names- Heck, you can even point it at objects and it will search for them.....the best bit is it translates menus and it can scan a wine label and inform you of where is the cheapest place to purchase is.

After trying loads of translation apps I have found Microsoft Translator works best, yep I know it's Microsoft but it works. It's free and you can download it from the Play store.

Google transl;ate for us too. And you can use it in several ways, not just typing in words. You can point the camera on your phone at anything written, such as a menu, and get it translated. And you can speak in it to translate verbally so the other person can hear it in their own language.

Another thumbs up for google translate, my neigbours come from Belorus and i used it to explain to them that they had squirrels living in there attic, they understood straight away no need for me to do squirrel impersonations :D

Thanks guys, looks like google is the way to go then. I'll have to get my five year old granddaughter to show me how to use my phone. It might well save an embarrassing situation like the one we had in Bulgaria. We were staying at a very nice hotel in Varna, posh area, clean and tidy but my wife was convinced the establishment opposite was a knocking shop. I must admit I couldn't take my eyes off the young lady parading up and down outside the entrance wearing the shortest of short skirts. So I was kept on a very tight rein and it wasn't until we saw several respectable couples being escorted inside that curiosity got the better of us. This place turned out to be one of the best restaurants in Varna. So we booked a table and had a great el fresco meal with lots of good wine being serenaded by this good looking fella playing a guitar. He kept making eyes at the wife but all she was interested in was what was being poured into her glass. Now when we're in a foreign country we always try to ask for the bill in the local lingo, so my wife who by now was completely off her trolley got hold of Romeo and asked him to translate. She then called the waitress over and asked for the bill in something that could have been Swahili for all I know. The waitress ran into the kitchen screaming with laughter. The chef then approached our table and asked us how we would like our donkeys arse cooked

Google translate is great.

Too good in fact.

I’ve used it to help me book sites in Netherlands and Germany and had long replies in Dutch and German ??

Definitely Google translate, I’ve had two of the gizmos having invested at development stage but they don’t have the wherewithal of Google and are sadly lacking if they did what it says on the tin it would be marvellous but it doesn’t so go with Google.

Quite of often you whip your Smartphone out and translate say English to Spanish and the Spaniard whips his out (hey stop it) and does Spanish to English, therefore, same as the Gizmos are supposed to operate.
Of course you could go with two Smartphones ;)

Well, where’s the fun in that!? ?

Off to download google translate. I’m always happy to attempt to to butcher the local language, and find it improves ones reception no end, but sometimes it’s really a lot easier to get some help.

Google translate is a constant supplier of hilarity, especially when translating into French :giggler: ... and a major cause of embarrassment and/or offence ... or blank stares of incomprehension.
