I keep seeing these being promoted and they appear to be quite good but before spending any of my hard earned I would like to hear the opinions of others.

Try viewranger app for free - has worked well for us for a few walking and cycling routes. Komoot aquired Viewramger last year. OSmaps and app work on a subscription and you can look for other walks etc, and maps.me is great for offline maps. Lots of choice out there to try and see what works for you

Open street map good for showing footpaths and bridleways for free.
I use it in conjunction with OS maps app free version which shows uploaded walks by other people but the free version does not have the detail of footpaths.

I used komoot for planning my 900 mile bike ride. Basically used it for a to b directional planning then tweaked it for daily routing. I find it brilliant for picking out bike routes I would not have seen but in reality, like all of them, it has limitations.

For detail I still think you cannot beat OS.

I paid a once off price of £30 for Komoot so not expensive. If I was looking to be on foot and not two wheels I would not use it. For finding footpaths and running routes I use mapometer and for terrain detail OS.

Is there a key somewhere for Open Street map?
Explaining what the various symbols & lines mean.

My app doesn't look anything like that on my phone... wonder if I've actually downloaded the right app

Edit... just reopened the app and it all there as you illustrated. Odd (undoubtedly user error)

Anyway, looks good.

I found Komoot whilst we were in Germany and it worked brilliantly. Once back home in Spain it wasn't so good. The Spanish hikers and bikers use Wikiloc.

We use Komoot for walking, have found it very intuitive to use
Paid for the map upgrade
Would recommend
Thanks Robert. Komoot have an offer on at present. A one time payment of £19.99 for the entire worldwide maps including lifetime updates. I will consult my banker 😂.

Cycling: We use it and find it does what we want it to. Have a iPhone holder for the bike which helps but you can use is on audio only. We also have Apple Watches and it connects to that too.
